Health and Society vs. The Nation
This second assignment provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate the skills you have
developed through this course in accessing, managing, and interpreting data. It will also provide an
opportunity to discuss in depth how the determinants of health can lead to differences in health
ehaviours across population groups.
Each student needs to complete this assignment independently (i.e. as an individual).
The topic for this assignment is the prevalence of smoking.
This assignment is comprised of five (5) tasks.
Exercise 1: Compile data sets
This exercise requires you compile data sets from each of the following sources:
XXXXXXXXXXHealth and Society Student Health Survey dataset
XXXXXXXXXXAustralian National Health Survey (Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data)
smoking dataset
XXXXXXXXXXAboriginal and To
es Strait Islander Health Survey (ABS data) smoking dataset
For this exercise, you will need to download three data sets, available under the “Resources” section
of the learnonline course site. You are also required to appropriately reference the data sources
used.
Exercise 2: Create a summary table for your data
For this exercise, you will need to create a table in Microsoft Word to present summary statistics
according to age groups for each of the three population groups:
XXXXXXXXXXHealth and Society student cohort;
XXXXXXXXXXAustralian National Health Survey sample; and
XXXXXXXXXXAboriginal and To
es Strait Islander Health Survey sample.
The age groups by which you should present your data include: XXXXXXXXXXyears; XXXXXXXXXXyears; 3) 35-
44 years; 4) 45 years and over; 5) Total (i.e. 18 years and over).
Note: you may need to combine data for the age group 45 years and over.

For this table, you will need to report for each population group by each age group the number and
proportion of those who are smokers.
For the 2019 Health and Society student cohort, please do the calculations as taught in the previous
weeks by using the COUNTIF and COUNTIFS formulas as appropriate.
For the XXXXXXXXXXAustralian National Health Survey dataset, no calculation is required, you have to
identify the co
ect data in the dataset and copy them in your spreadsheet.
For the XXXXXXXXXXAboriginal and To
es Strait Islander Health Survey dataset, it is the same process,
identify and copy the co
ect data. For the age group 45 years and over, you need to combine data:
add the numbers (estimates) for the group 45-54 years and the group 55 years and over. To
calculate the proportion, please divide this sum by the sum of the persons in each of the two age
groups (last row in the sheet ‘Total persons’) and multiply by 100 to get the %. For the % Total (≥18
years), use the non-age-standardized figure.
Harmonize the number of decimals shown for the % (1 decimal best).
The table below is an example of the kind of table you could create and format to present your data:

groups

Exercise 3: Present your summary data in a graph
Create a graph (bar or column chart) in Excel to present the data summarised in the table in Exercise
2 for the prevalence of smoking. For this exercise, you should present the percentages (%) by age
group (not the n’s) in your graph.
Note: To create your graph from the data presented in Exercise 2, you will need to format your data in Excel
differently to that presented in your table for Exercise 2 to allow you to create an appropriate graph.
Note: You need to create your graph in Excel, but you must present it within the main body of your
assignment in Microsoft Word.
Exercise 4: Compare health status across the three population groups
In XXXXXXXXXXwords, describe the data presented in Exercises 2 and 3 (the table and graph), and
compare the three population groups. This exercise should include a description of any similarities
and/or differences in the prevalence of smoking between your student cohort (2018 Health and
Society student cohort), Indigenous Australians and the total Australian population.
Note: The word count is a maximum (i.e., you will be penalised for any text over the stated word limit).
Exercise 5: Discuss the role of determinants of health and health literacy
In XXXXXXXXXXwords, discuss the social, cultural and environmental determinants which potentially
contribute to differences in the prevalence of smoking between your student cohort (2018 Health
and Society student cohort), the Indigenous Australian population, and the total Australian
population. For your discussion, you may find it helpful to focus on one determinant for each
‘category’ (e.g., income (social determinant), discrimination (cultural determinant), and remoteness
(environmental determinant)).
As part of your discussion, also address the relevance of health literacy to differences across the
three population groups. Your discussion should be informed by at least two appropriate peer
eviewed references.
Note: The word count is a maximum (i.e., you will be penalised for any text over the stated word limit). The
word count includes the in-text references but not the reference list.

Format requirements
This assignment should not exceed 6 pages (2 cm margins) with text formatted with 1.5 line spacing
and a minimum of 11 point font. For tables you may use single (1.0) spacing and 10 point font (but
no smaller than this). A maximum of one decimal should be used and consistent for all data
presented. Ensure there are titles for the table and the figure. The titles should be comprehensive
and concise (no sentence).
The assignment should be presented in four sections:
Section 1: You should have an assignment title, your name and student ID number.
Formatted table with original data and graph (Exercises 2 & 3) in Section 1.
Section 2: A maximum of 330 words responding to Exercise 4.
Section 3: A maximum of 770 words responding to Exercise 5.
Section 4: A reference list formatted according to the UniSA-Harvard (author-date) referencing
style. You may choose to include more than 2 peer-reviewed references but at least
2 references for Exercise 5 must be peer reviewed.
Note: You should have at least 5 references in your reference list (3 data set references PLUS
at least 2 peer-reviewed journal articles.
Please ensure there is a title for all graphs and tables, and that figures and tables are refe
ed to in
the associated text.
Note: You are encouraged to use the UniSA Roadmap to Referencing resource (http:
oadmap.unisa.edu.au)
to assist you with co
ect in-text referencing and reference list formatting.
Submission
All assignments will be automatically assessed by Turnitin. Assignments demonstrating similarity
will be reviewed for academic misconduct, so it is very important that you read your Turnitin
eports and make any necessary changes. Turnitin compares your assignment against all
assignments in the Turnitin databases AND all electronic resources such as the web or li
ary
databases and provides a similarity report. The report highlights text, images or tables which is
similar to another source and calculates a percentage. The percentage on its own means very little,
ecause if you have referenced sources, then these references should be identified by Turnitin as
eing similar to li
ary databases or the original source. For any assignment where you are required

to use references, the similarity report percentage will never be zero (0%). Use of quotes is not
allowed in this assignment. Please look at the resources on adequate paraphrasing on the course
website (Foundation week). There are also useful resources for writing assignments
https:
lo.unisa.edu.au/mod
ook/view.php?id=1144638, in particular for students who have
difficulties with English.
When using Turnitin, you MUST OPEN and READ the Turnitin report, not just look at the similarity
percentage. Your Turnitin report should ALWAYS show your references
eference list as being
similar or the same as another source. BUT unless you have directly quoted (and co
ectly
eferenced text as a direct quote), there should no other text identified as similar to another source.
If Turnitin has highlighted areas of text within your assignment that is not a direct quote and
eferenced as such, this is likely to be word for word copying from a source or paraphrasing of the
source; and this is plagiarism. It is always worth reading your Turnitin report and if needed, amend
your assignment BEFORE you submit the final version. Please note that it can take over 24 hours to
generate a Turnitin report or longer in peak periods. Please also note that suspected plagiarism
cases will be refe
ed to an Academic Integrity Officer.
