Executive summary
Efficient Lighting in buildings is an important concern as it makes up considerable amount of energy consumption in the total energy consumption. The cu
ent report discusses the ways and means of enabling efficient lighting in buildings. Typical discussion included in the report spans from estimation of the right lighting needs in the organization, selecting the most appropriate design (efficient system to convert to lighting) makes up one of the most important aspect of the efficient lighting. Secondly, deploying the right lighting design in the organization that utilizes the available lighting in the most appropriate manner do make up the second important aspects of the design. Other aspects include controlling the lighting systems to minimize energy usage and so to enable efficient lighting in the organization. There is also discussion of sustainable energy usage for lighting applications in the report. However the scope of discussion is only limited to the application of the efficient lighting to the buildings and not included for open spaces, grounds, street lighting, decorative lighting outside the buildings etc.
Introduction
Lighting makes up one of the major source of energy consumption in several utilities which spans residential, commercial and other miscellaneous applications as well. Residential, commercial and Industrial domains all do consume considerable amount of energy in the form of lighting since it is essential for daily routines. Typical energy consumption for lighting application can vary from 20% to as high as 50% depending on the type of energy usage entity. For industries that do work for 24X7, the lighting energy requirements will be too high. For Commercial residential applications like Hotels (Resorts), commercial shopping malls, there will be considerable amount of energy consumption in the form of lighting energy usage. In this connection, any measure if undertaken to save the energy being consumed as lighting energy, can save lot of dollars for the organization or the entity in focus. There are attempts being made to reduce the energy usage of lighting applications from long time. There are two important focus areas in this regard. The first is that the designing the lighting lumens just as per the specific usage requirements. If it is a residential application, depending on the type of activities that do take place in the premises under the lighting applications, the maximum lumens will be fixed. In the same regard, the energy applications for industries and other commercial applications also will be fixed based on the typical activities being performed in the premises and based on their lighting requirements. For example if it is automated process that does not involve manual involvement, lighting will be sufficient as per the supervisory needs. At the same time if it is a machine shop and if requires focussed lighting, then it need to have more lumens per square unit area (Lux) and hence needs more intense lighting devices. Hence
Hence one of the key aspects of the efficient lighting systems is to ensure that there is no unwanted lighting, which can result in more energy consumption and also contributes towards more energy consumption and high initial investment as well. Through this means there won’t be unnecessary lighting usage in the building. At the same time, designing effective usage systems also do work of energy saving. If the lighting systems are designed such that they are effectively used for the desired lighting application, there won’t be unnecessary and excess installation of the energy applications. For example there is no need to illuminate a very large area of the premises when the work is only focussed on a head stock of a lathe bed. There can be focussed lighting at this location and rest of the premises can have normal lighting for just visibility requirements. Hence, there is need to focus on the estimation of the right lighting requirements as well designing the system for right usage of the lighting sources. Secondly designing of the lighting unit (device) itself effectively will reduce further the energy usage. If the electrical bulbs are employed with efficient material and techniques that consume less energy and perform well, then there is scope for overall energy saving in the utility (particular residential complex or commercial entity or so forth) from lighting requirements.
Scope of the report
Considering the significance of this particular aspect of energy saving in lighting, the following part of the report is discussing about the efficient lighting systems in the organization. The discussion includes the design of the lighting entity, efficient estimation of the requirements and efficient deployment of the same in the organizations through automated controls (Pandharepande and Caicedo,2015) etc. Also, the discussion included other modes of energy saving like sustainable and natural energy sources through eco-friendly and ecology oriented design procedures.
Overview of Efficient lighting systems
There are attempts to reduce the electrical energy usage for lighting applications by improving the design employed for lighting applications since a long time. Some of the basic concerns that are considered in this aspect include, aspects like consideration to the right amount of the energy usage, there is no need for more light as light is necessary only upto the needs in focus. Quality of light is as important as quantity of light. Which means there is need to employ only the right quality lighting, there is no need to employ more number of lighting units, only appropriate number of lighting systems that too only located in the right locations like right altitude and orientation will be necessary. Quality lighting will employ location of the lighting at appropriate altitudes, taking advantage of the colours for reflection and to reduce the overall lighting electrical loads, taking usage of natural lighting wherever possible etc. ...
