The Myth of the Latin Woman" by Cofer and "Just Walk on By" by Staples
Similarities
Similarity 1: Stereotypes - Usage of stereotypes pertaining to the daily lives must not be allowed as it will affect people and make them question themselves and consequently limit them pertaining to one’s full potential. Now here in these two essays both the authors have been subjected to stereotyping and how people think wrongly about them.
Cofer : Victims of Stereotypes
Quote: “As a Puerto Rican girl growing up in the United States and wanting like most children to 'belong, ' I resented the stereotype that my Hispanic appearance called forth from many people I met (Browdy).”
Analysis: This quote shows how the author Cofer faced a cultural shock as she stepped into America. Her identity was seen to be something that is not fixated therefore her reminiscence home is quite evident over here.
· Staples
Quote: “Away from I hometown I was thoroughly….fear….unpleasantries by policemen, doormen (Staples)…”
Analysis: Here in this essay named Just Walk on By Staples makes usage of examples for shedding light on the racial stereotyping he was subjected to. He describes how he could not freely walk down the street as the people would stare at them in disgust. In addition to this, he says how he is harassed by localites as well as the policemen.
Similarity 2:_Education
· Cofer:
Quote: Another facet of the myth of the Latin woman in the United States is the menial, the domestic-Maria the housemaid or counter girl...the funny maid, mispronouncing words and cooking up a spicy storm in a shiny California kitchen-has been perpetuated by the media
Analysis: This is a clear representation of misinterpretation that thrives in the mentality that all Latinas are uneducated. The author says how she has been attempting to get a higher degree along with the women concerning her clan, and this consequently belittles all the efforts. The society has this misconception as Cofer says she does not wear her degree around her neck and since Latinas have an occasion where they are sent to kitchen. Therefore, the common belief that thrives that ;Latinas belong in the kitchen.
· Staples
Quote: ” Following the late nights at work..”
Analysis: Staple recounts how despite surpassing the white folks in the field of education he has still be ba
ed and discriminated on the basis of his racial identity.
Differences
Difference 1: Cultural Identities
“enormous red Doberman pinscher”
Staples: Staples goes on to recount the fact how racist attitude against the African American has persisted over time and made all the way till 21st century. Here he makes usage of racial stereotype and how he once entered a jewellery store for writing an article for a newspaper and people greeted him by calling him a “Doberman”. He goes on to say how people mistakes him for a burglar and view him with te
ible suspicion.
· Cofer
Quote: “You will often find that the hispanic roles in movies or television shows portray a stereotypical character of a Latina for the entertainment of their audience.”
Analysis: Here Cofer describes how women are tagged to be sizzling as well as smouldering and how they compared to food. This quote also puts forth light in the aspect where Latina women are mostly uneducated and they are nothing beyond their materialistic attribute. They are vilified and objectified by the kind of roles they are offered in the films.
Difference 2: Gender stereotypes
· Cofer:
Quote: It is a one-dimensional view that the media have found easy to promote
Analysis: She states how being a Latino and furthermore being a woman earned her the obvious disadvantage of viewing her as a materialistic object and nothing else. They are easy prey as women are quite naturally believed to be feeble creatures and especially on racial grounds the women of white descent also views them as something trivial.
· Staples
Quote: “an accomplice in tyranny….indistinguishable from the muggers.”
Analysis: This is one anecdote that is shared by Staples where he states that women who crossed the gateway had instilled the fear on seeing him as if he is a murderer.
