2. Academic Details

2.1 Overview of the Subject

This subject introduces students to special topics relating to Australian financial reporting with an
emphasis on recognition and measurement of assets and liabilities. It comprehensively covers a
number of Australian-International Financial Reporting Standards relevant to reporting problems in
particular areas (such as cash flows and revenue), and with reference to particular types of assets and
liabilities (such as intangible assets, share-based payments, leases and complex financial instruments).
In addition, the expanded disclosure is reviewed along with various proposals for strengthening external
financial reporting.

Executive Summary-
Accounting for the intangibles has always been a major challenge for the accountants across the world due to the ambiguity it possesses when it comes to internally developed intangibles and the acquired assets. The firms in the US, and across the globe tend to over allocate the costs when it comes to capitalising the costs for the intangibles, also the nature of the intangibles which used to be there on the balance sheet were subject to scrutiny.
Accounting differences prevailing when it comes to acquiring the assets vs. developing themselves gives the rise of the distorted behaviour to the firms and driving the behaviour of acquiring them at lower costs.
Different jurisdictions also play a different role when it comes to asset recognition, cost attribution, nature of the intangibles, classification as the economic benefits generating vs the not identifiable assets.
Hence, at this point of time, we need to have that standardized set of measures taken across the globe to

For example this can be measured using the cost of acquisition or the cost at it has been developed by the firm. These assets are amortized over the period of time based on the useful lives. Apart from this, not identifiable asset which is not amortized over the period of time is goodwill which needs to be tested for the impairment.
Accounting difference for internally developed intangible assets and acquired assets-
The key accounting difference for the internally developed intangible assets and acquired assets is that, when the assets are acquired they will be showing up in the balance sheet of the acquiree at the acquisition costs and when they are internally developed the costs could already been expensed or capitalised and it will to the extent of the costs.1
