Essay on Comparison of Planning Systems
(Maximum 1150 words (excluding tables, illustrations, bibliography)
You are required to write an essay on western planning system. A planning system is the process and procedure in place for planning of cities and regions, system for enforcement, and institutional settings governing the planning process. It is sufficient to base the essay on a planning system as it is generally followed in English speaking countries, for example UK, North America, Australia. Choose either United States or UK or Australia as the focus of the assignment.
You are required to elaborate:
1. Nature, content and emphasis of planning and plans
2. How planning of cities and regions is dealt with under the general framework of planning
3. Planning institutions and their role
4. Examples of success and failure
Assessment will be based on:
1. Evidence of research (40%)
2. Clarity of ideas and expression (20%)
3. Logical argument (20%)
4. Ability to comprehend and present issues (10%)
5. Appropriate references (10%)
The assignment should be organised under suitable headings and subheadings and all pages must be numbered. References should be listed at the end of the assignment. Harvard reference system should be used. Online resources are available on Harvard style.
References from unverified sources like Wikipedia MUST be avoided.
