ISCI 104 Natural Hazards Hurricane Module Data Interpretation & Writing Activity 1.) One of the reasons why people were resistant to evacuating when Hurricane Sandy was being forecasted, was that previous evacuation warnings from Hurricane Irene were inaccurate. The consequence of not trusting the science was deadly for many residents that chose not to evacuate. As scientists, we develop mathematical models that allow us to predict the path and intensity of hurricanes. The accuracy of these models are increasing with time and new data; however, there is always some level of forecasting error. Interpret the following graph in your own words, as a complete paragraph. Note that the time scale on the graph refers to the time until landfall of the hurricane. Please be as specific in your response as possible and be sure to review the narrated Powerpoint file on Canvas on graphical interpretation of scientific data. Source: National Hurricane Center, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.2.) Use the following graph to report the anticipated impacts of Hurricane Sandy. Anticipated wind speed: ______ mph Storm surge: _______ ft Damage level: _______ Hurricane category: ______ Given that typical storm of the same category has far less impact on society than Sandy, use the information from the video and from reputable on-line sources to describe the primary reasons why hurricane Sandy was so disastrous. Write your answer as a well-structured one-page essay. Also report the actual wind speed, storm surge and damage level. How did these compare with the anticipated values you previously reported? 3.) Which hurricane was the most expensive in U.S. history? What year did it occur and where, and the category? How does hurricane Sandy compare to this event (in terms of cost and loss of life)? Write a well-developed paragraph to answer this question. Use reputable internet sources. 4.) From the instructor’s introductory lecture (pre-recorded and available on Canvas), what is the relationship between the frequency (how often) and magnitude (how severe) of hurricanes?5.) Because hurricanes require warm ocean temperatures, use the following data to develop a testable hypothesis about how the intensity of hurricanes may be expected to change in the future. Use the ‘If-Then-Because’ format from the week one handout (available on Canvas). Source: National Centers for Environmental Information, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

1. This is the graph which displays the NHC officials the annual average e
ors while tracking the tropical storms of the Atlantic basin along with the hu
icanes which occu
ed from 1970s to roughly 2017-18. Hence, this graph depicts that as the hu
icanes are being tracked through advanced equipment, the number of e
ors decreases. Yet there are some levels of e
or which can be found. In the graph it can be observed that there are e
ors which are being observed by the forecasting periods in each of the tropical storms and hu
icanes. These can be thus observed in 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, 96 hours and 120 hours duration. But it was in the year 1973, when the 72 hours forecasting duration which reflected the greatest e
ors in terms of forecasting. In the year 2015, the second greatest e
or was the 120 hours forecasting period. Hence, this graph illustrates that the bigger is the forecasting period, the bigger will be the forecasting e
ors.
2. Anticipated wind speed was 74 mph; Storm Surge: 6 feet; Damage Level: Anticipated moderate damage level; Hu
