Instructions

A new urban unrestricted access roadway is proposed for Lucas County, Ohio (Toledo). The proposed roadway will be 3 miles long and the traffic mix is expected to consist of the following vehicle types.

  • Passenger cars (gasoline fueled) – 3,600 vehicles per day.
  • Passenger trucks (gasoline fueled) – 1,200 vehicles per day.
  • Light commercial trucks (gasoline fueled) – 50 vehicles per day.
  • Transit buses (diesel fueled) – 120 vehicles per day.
  • School buses (diesel fueled) – 20 vehicles per day.
  • Single unit short-haul trucks (diesel fueled) – 40 vehicles per day.

The regional planning commission has asked your team to develop emissions rates to help analyze the air quality impacts of the new roadway, which will open in 2017.

  1. Using theoutput file from an EPA MOVES “Inventory” calculation run (Excel), prepare a table of emissions rates (grams per mile) for each vehicle type for the following pollutants: Atmospheric CO2, Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx). (10 points)
  2. Using the emissions rates you developed in Part [a], calculate the total daily emissions (kilograms) of Atmospheric CO2, Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) for the proposed roadway. (9 points)
  3. You are informed that the regional public transit authority in Toledo is transitioning its bus fleet from diesel fuel to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuel. The transition is expected to be complete by 2016, prior to the opening of the new roadway. Re-calculate the total daily emissions (kilograms) of Atmospheric CO2, Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) for the proposed roadway with CNG fuel type for transit buses. All other traffic data remains the same.
