Literature Review
As expressed by Kong (2018), in order to retain employees within the hotel industry, it is important to adopt certain policies and practices by the hotel management. As observed by Goh & Kong (2018), it is crucial for the hotel industry to provide opportunities and adopt practices that will motivate the employees so that they can improve their productivity. As expressed by Healey (2017), the managers need to understand the challenges and issues that are faced by the employees within the organisation so that necessary actions can be taken to retain the employees. As pointed out by Jaworski, Ravichandran, Karpinski and Singh (2018), there are various factors that contribute to the higher turnover rates of the employees.
This includes a lack of clarity in the job responsibilities, lack in the flexibility in the job roles and lack of efficient communication in the workplace. As observed by Chau et al. (2019), there were several employees in the hotel industry opined that the job role in the food and beverage department is challenging and involve several risks. As stated by the HR Institute in Australia (2016), the hotels in Sydney have initiated employee engagement programs so that they can retain employees in the hotel industry, especially in the food and beverage departments.
As reported by Yu, Gudergan and Chen (2018), the employees are mostly in search of better opportunities, and it is important for the management of the hotel industry take effective steps so that the employees are provided with an adequate opportunity within the organisation to grow. In addition, as expressed by Matt Lennon (2019), a growth-oriented work culture have a better opportunity in the retention of the employees; this will also include providing support and motivation for the employees.
For instance, in the case of certain hotel groups, as expressed by Goh & King (2019), a team-based structure is followed as a part of work culture. This allows the team members to collaborate with each other and improve their productivity. The retentivity results in providing quality services by the workforce. The retention of the employees with the increased motivation of the workers within the organisation can be explained by Herzberg's Motivation-Hygiene theory (Alshmemri, Shahwan-Akl & Maude, 2017). According to Herzberg, the satisfaction of the employees are a continuous process.
However, the more motivated are the workers more satisfied they were. According to the motivation-Hygiene theory, the factors that influence the motivation of the employees include responsibility, intrinsic interest in their work, achievements and advancement. On the other hand, in terms of a hygiene factor, which contributes to the retention of the employees includes supervision, organisational policies, working condition, administrative practices and salary of the employees. According to the reports of Business Insider (2019), the employees in any organisation area n asset. While in the case of hotel chains, the employees are the skilled resources that are essential in meeting the customer's demand and requirements.
As stated by Justin Hemmes (2019), the retention of the employees needs hotel management in adopting certain recognition and reward programs that will help the employees feel they are appreciated for their hard work. It will also motivate the employees to increase their productivity so that they can receive recognition. Training, as well as development programs, are also another effective method, by which the skill of the employees can be enhanced and thereby contribute to the retention of the employees.
