Introduction
Hamlet by William Shakespeare is a five act play of revenge of a son for his father. The play starts with unnatural events followed by the appearance of the ghost of senior Hamlet. While analyzing the play, the inductive and deductive logic has been applied at several area by the different characters. There are several soliloquies used in the play which has helped the audience to understand the thoughts of the characters. Shakespeare used several literary devices and introduced logical fallacy through his play Hamlet. The revengeful behavior of a person can make him anxious and not allow to judge between the right and wrong. This idea is
ought out clearly through the play. Hamlet is drawn as a confused and powerless character which created a thrill throughout the play regarding the revenge of his father. All the factors set up a deductive logic followed in the play through the literary devices.
Deductive and Inductive Logic
The logic which are based on infe
ing the facts are represented as deductive logic. For example, we drink water with a straw and hence in deductive logic, it can be infe
ed that soups can also be consumed with the straw. As mentioned by Besnard and Anthony, a deductive reasoning is always followed by a monotonic logic. Such application of argumentation is identified in the play in several scenes.
The logic which are based on creating an inference out of an observation is termed as inductive logic. For example, when Hamlet was found to talk in the air, it was infe
ed that he is going mad out of grief of his father’s death. As stated by Blevins and Daniel, the literary forms in a material are connected to a logic for its proper inference. The inductive logic is found in the case of hamlet when he talks to the ghost of his father in the play.
Logic behind Hamlet’s Revenge
After knowing about the murder of his father from the ghost itself, Hamlet was revengeful towards his uncle Claudius and wanted to give him a vengeful death like his father. The thirst of revenge took him over and he was anxious at each step he took towards fulfilling his plan. The ghost appears in the Act I commanding to ‘Revenge his soul and most unnatural murder”. Hamlet was revengeful as Claudius not only murdered his father, but also ma
ied his mother within a month of his father’s death. Several betrayal thoughts were su
ounding him from both his uncle and mother which led him to make a revengeful plan against the new king Claudius. Hamlet was failing to keep his promise the entire play and the ghost keeps on reappearing making him remember about the revenge his is bound to take. In Act III too the ghost reappears and reminds Hamlet ‘Do not forget! This...
