Introduction:
My research proposal is to study the effects of Sonar on marine mammals that use echolocation. Considering sonar works on the same principles as echolocation, producing sound and interpreting the returning echoes to identify objects under water, I predict there is some co
elation to the use of sonar and the lives of these mammals.
In class we learned that several marine mammals use echolocation to navigate murky waters, find prey, and avoid predators. Dolphins, sperm whales and killer whales, for instance, all use echolocation. These mammals are considered intelligent and top the list of
ain size compared to other mammals.

MAR 151L- Individual Proposal
Proposing an Oceanographic Study
Spring 2021
Topic of the proposal must be turned into the instructor by April 2nd
Description
Often in science, before an experiment (also called a study) can be ca
ied out, a proposal must be written and approved to obtain the resources needed to ca
y out the experiment. Using what you learn over the course of the semester in this class and in lecture, you will be proposing your own scientific experiment. Your proposals will include the following sections:
Introduction
· Give background information about topic you choose
· Give background information about the study area
· Present hypothesis you would like to test
· Explain reasoning behind hypothesis
Materials and Methods
· Give background on equipment you would use (maybe a
ief history)
· Discuss safety
· Discuss procedure (stepwise so it is clear what you would be doing)
Timeline/Budget
· Briefly discuss length of study
· Propose a budget (assume that you have access to unlimited resources). This can be very general. You should list the items or services that will cost money but you do not need to include actual values for this portion.
Discussion
· Discuss overall merit of the project
· Explain possible sources of e
or in the study
· Explain greater significance to the ocean
***Title Page and Literature Cited***
?This is important!
· Must have a title page with the following:
· Title
· Name
· Date
· Course
· Teache
· Must have Literature Cited page in MLA format
· 12 point font, double spaced
· May include 3 images/figures maximum
· Must have in-text citations that are co
ectly formatted
· Title and Literature Cited pages DO NOT count towards the final page count
*If you do not know how to properly use MLA format or in-text citations, please ask a li
arian or me for help. Citing sources co
ectly is crucial for this assignment.
Othe
· Length = 4 pages minimum. Note: Title and Literature Cited pages DO NOT count towards the final page count.
· Please note that this is a proposal. This means it will not have any results. You are proposing a study that will be ca
ied out at some future time. You will not be ca
ying out the study you propose.
***The final paper will be due on the final day of class, April 23rd.***
