Research Paper I: Research a Movement or Design Philosophy

Discuss the significance of a design movement or philosophy to the history of graphic design.

Discuss the origins of the movement/philosophy with consideration for its place in the political, social, and historical context. Define the movement/philosophy, with emphasis on how it differs from those that preceded and followed it and how its concepts and ideas are manifested in products (e.g., books, magazines, architecture, other products).

Focus mainly on graphic design. Name designers and artists associated with the movement/philosophy and discuss their designs in light of its ideology. (Were they defined by the movement/philosophy? Did they break with it? Are/were their designs more influential than the movement as a whole, or just a part of it?) Discuss any lasting influence the movement/philosophy has had.

Significance of Design Movement on Graphic Design History
Abstract
The contemporary society understands design and the designer’s role as a by-product of
industrial revolution that resulted in workforce mechanisation through utilization of machinery.
However, design evolved as a specialist field over time. The report describes design not only in
terms of historical and cultural phenomena but also explains the social and economic influences
of graphic design during its evolution from an ancient art to modern art and the significant role
played by designers.
Introduction
It is prudent to consider design as some kind of a human intervention which came into
eing for making more hospitable su
oundings whose parameters were dynamic and changed
from time to time. Designers utilize space as dynamic entity that can be creatively used rather
than a mere canvas. Design is all pervasive and su
ounds us in various manifestations such as
ze
a ornaments, drawings, shapes, carvings, abstract art, road signs, rituals etc.
Technological innovations had a great role in graphic design evolution as well as
practice. It has also been influenced by the needs of the society as well as visual imagination of
designers. The practice of graphic design has been in various forms historically and significant
graphic design examples date back to ancient Chinese, Roman, Egyptian and Greek manuscripts.
Graphic design flourished along with printing and development of book production in the 15
th

century.
Discussion
Although graphic design is quite a new profession, however, it foundation is soaked deep into
antiquity. Ancient Egyptian manuscripts are a supe

especially The Book of the Dead. Colourful illustration on papyrus rolls reflect Hieroglyphic

atives which cohesively combine words and images and uses consistent

writing and pictures. Firm contours of

ound flat colour areas showing a vi

contrast to rich hieroglyphic writing texture ("graphic design | art", 2017).
Production of manuscripts in Europe in middle ages led to different page designs
including production techniques providing better illustration and styles of lettering. Regional
styles emerged due to isolation and poor conditions of travel. European manuscripts used
approaches of medieval art and design especially Ireland’s Hiberno-Saxon approach including
European Gothic style of late 14
th
and early 15
th
centuries to achieve major innovations in
graphic-design. Handmade books in Islamic lands also reached great artistic levels from 10
th
to
15
th
century especially in Persian miniature style of painting in which refined shapes with precise
outlines are used to depict human and animal figures including buildings and landscape. Though
graphic design reached many high points during manuscript production, it actually blossomed
during the era of movable type printmaking technologies that developed in China with
woodblock and relief printing work in 6
th
century CE. The artifacts that have survived indicate
wide use of printing and high level of graphic design artistry achieved by Chinese at such an
early time. Chinese inventions gradually influenced Middle east and European artists and by 15
th

century, there was widespread use of
oadsides made of woodblock and printed paper books.
Johannes Gutenberg of Germany developed a printing text method by 1450 for text
printing from movable metal casted raised alphabets. Combination of woodblock illustrations
and typeset text were used to produce illustrated printed books by middle of 15
th
century. This
was the beginning of major advances in graphic design in Europe over the next few centuries
("graphic design | art", 2017).

Development of Graphic design in Europe
Graphic design had a relatively quiet time during 17
th
century. The work of 16
th
century
in graphic design such as typeface designs and woodblocks somehow was good enough for
contemporary printers and need for new innovation looked unnecessary ("graphic design | art",
2017)
The Rococo movement of 18
th
century with its characteristic curvilinear style, discovered
expression through the works of Pie
e-Simon Fournier who was a French type founder. Another
great medium used for book illustrations were the Copperplate engraving technique in this
period. The Rococo style combined used an elaborative and intricate style with decorative
initials that became typical of this genre. The second half of 18
th
century saw designers getting
inspiration from Classical art and emergence of Neoclassical rectilinear designs using straight
lines and a restricted use of geometry ("graphic design | art", 2017).
The 18
th
century saw the beginning of Industrial revolution which was a dynamic process
lasting till the 19
th
century. This period saw news ways of using graphic designs and new
production technologies. Poster became a popular medium for graphic design. Advertisement
