TASK 1: Individual Presentation on Australian Workplace Culture & Diversity (5 minutes)
a) Research Australian legislation which impacts on Diversity (e.g. racial discrimination, sexual harassment)
) Prepare no more than 5 Power Point slides for a presentation
c) Deliver a short oral presentation to the class about your experience/understanding of Australian Workplace Culture & Diversity, based
on your work experience and/or research.

Your in-class presentation must include:
• The background to at least two of the following forms of diversity: mental and physical ability; age; belief systems/values; culture; race;
eligion; gender and sexual orientation; language; politics
• Your understanding of the laws dealing with abuse or discrimination
• The impact of this diversity on the workplace (e.g. special considerations given to particular employees with a diversity)
• Which strategies you used to respond to those diversity issues (e.g. a change of behavior or attitude)
• How Australian practices of equal opportunity and social inclusion compare with those in your country of birth.

Strategies The presenter adequately explains their response to the diversity issues mentioned
and how they modified their behaviour in order to accommodate this diversity.
He/she also draws comparisons with diversity in their country of birth
Legislative
equirements
The presenter gives evidence of research analysis and understanding of Australian
laws related to Workplace diversity, including EEO and Fair Work laws

TASK 2: Case Study Analysis (800 words)


Write a concise review of the WHS issues raised in our assessment Case Study: When WHS training, supervision and communication fail.
Your review must include the following:
• A
ief overview of the organisational responsibilities for managing WHS under cu
ent legislation.
• Your analysis of the Duty of Care of stakeholders and PCBUs (State Government Public Works Department, External Contracting
Company, Supervisors and Employees) and how the State Government failed to manage the general WHS risks in contracted public works
efore the incident.
• Your views on whether in this case Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) or Toolbox Talks could have prevented the accident (or not)
• Your assessment of which of the changes introduced by the Department of Public Works will have the most impact on WHS and which
will be more or less adding to the bureaucracy and unproductive paperwork

The reviewer describes the function of SWMS (Safe Work Methods Statement) and Tool Box

TASK 3: Role play of WHS scenarios for assessment in pairs

You and a partner in class will be given role play cards which explain your roles and work situations. Each role play involves an incident or complaint
elated to work health and safety. After discussing the scenario with your partner, demonstrate your understanding of WHS reporting protocol and your
duty of care in safety monitoring in general.

Role play examples:
(Person 1): You work as a Web-designer for a medium-sized IT business. Most of the work you do is at a desk, fitted out with specialised equipment.
(a) Your desk is located directly under an air conditioner and (b) the computer screens may not be in the co
ect position for your body type.
Recently you have been suffering from a lot of neck and shoulder pain, and it is getting worse.
Report this problem to your supervisor. (Use your knowledge of WHS regulations)
(Person 2): You are the Manager of the Graphics design department of a medium-sized IT business. One of your employees comes to you
complaining of neck and shoulder pain. Respond to their complaint. (Use your knowledge of WHS legislation)
