Book Review Guide for When Asia Was the World, by Stewart Gordon
Due Date: No later than December 3 (Friday), by 5:00pm. Be sure to download your essay on the Assignments tab of the HY 104 Canvas page.
You may deviate from the structure below, but your review essay must address the biographies and topics listed. Paragraph lengths in parentheses are suggestions. After reading the entire book, write a review essay which addresses the following:
1. Provide a
ief capsule overview of the book. What is the theme of the book? Include some information on the author. (1 paragraph)
2. Discuss the Intan Shipwreck. Why is this shipwreck significant? What does it tell us about the world of South Asia and Southeast Asia, circa 1000CE? (approx. 2 paragraphs)
3. Discuss three of the following men: Xuanzang, Ibn Sina, A
aham bin Yiju, Ma Huan, Ba
ur. For each of the three you choose, address the following: Who is he? Where is he from? Where did he travel? What networks, connections, or linkages is he part of? How do we know about him? Why is he historically significant? (one long paragraph each; approximately 2 ½-3 pages total).
4. Who is Tome Pires? Why did the author choose to write about Pires and place him last among the travelers he writes about in When Asia Was the World? (one or two paragraphs)
5. What did you think about this book and the author’s approach to the history of Asia (from the Middle East to China)? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the book? Is there a major subject or topic that you believe should have been included but was not? Would you recommend this book to someone wanting to learn about pre-modern world history? Why or why not? (one paragraph to one page)
Writing Standards
---The review essay must be five full pages minimum, and seven full pages maximum in length.
---The review essay must use proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.
---The review essay must be typed, double-spaced, use 12 point font, and have one inch margins. Put page numbers at the bottom of the page or at the top right.
---Do not use lengthy quotations. If you use quotations or page citations, use (p. 159), for example, at the end of a sentence instead of footnotes or endnotes.
---Do not use outside sources, although you may consult our textbook for background information.
---This assignment is due no later than December 3 (Friday), by 5:00pm.
