SOCI4022
Assignment 2 April 2023

Technical notes for submission:
Your assignment should consist of a PDF document where tables are formatted
according to APA standards and guidelines.
I will not accept the SPSS Output as a display of your results. You will be evaluated for
how you selected the important parts of the SPSS output, and how you formatted them
into tables or graphs and discussed them.
Discuss the results substantially: rigor in discussing statistics, and clear na
ative when it
comes to talking about what these statistics mean. Build up a coherent and engaging
story that you must communicate effectively. Take the time and space that you need to
achieve these goals.
To submit on D2L:
• Video
• PPT of the video
• Assignment (PDF)
• Syntax file
Instructions (please read carefully)
Assignment 2 is about describing data with basic statistics and graphs, comparing
groups, and discussing results in meaningful ways. Moreover, it dives into co
elation,
simple and multiple linear regression.
In this assignment, you will be assigned a country from the PISA 2018 international
dataset.
The assignment consists of two analytical parts, and one presentation.

Part 1:
Use the syntax from Assignment 1. Use it to describe the sample of your country and to
study inequalities in reading, sense of belonging, and intensity of bullying between
groups of students from different socioeconomic status. This involves two things:
a) You can disregard analyses involving comparisons between sexes
) You must pay attention to the cut-off point to determine whose has low
socioeconomic status and who does not. The cut-off point for lowses is country-
specific.
Compare the results from your country-specific analyses with what you obtained in
Assignment 1 for Canada. Include also reference to OECD benchmarks.

Part 2:
2

For your country only, run three regression models:
a) Reading scores as a function of socioeconomic status (as lowses or ESCS
standardized)
) Reading scores as a function of socioeconomic status (as lowses or ESCS
standardized) and sense of belonging
c) Reading scores as a function of socioeconomic status (as lowses or ESCS
standardized) and sense of belonging and intensity of bullying experience.
Present the three models in a single table (as per Week 10 example), and comment on
the results, focusing on the changes of the coefficients from model to model, and
offering a clear interpretation of intercepts and slopes for each model.
Conclude Part 2 with a summary paragraph.

Presentation:
Using a PPT with four slides maximum, present on a 15 min max video:
1) Comparisons between Canada and your country in terms of inequalities in
eading skills, sense of belonging, and bullying experience between groups of
students (poorer vs richer students)
2) A regression-based na
ative of the relationships between reading skills and
sense of belonging, bullying and socioeconomic status.
The video should show the slides and yourself (with or without focus on your face)
presenting the material.
