Student Brief LSEC N307
As part of the course you are required to do a report of 1000 words. The preliminary report accounts for 16% and is 800 words with a minimum of 4 references. The extended report is 14% and 1000 words with a minimum of 8 references. Your report can be +10% without penalty.
  • Your report will count for 30% of your overall course grade.
  • You should do an extensive amount of research for your report. After your preliminary draft you will be given feedback to improve your paper.
  • You must submit your report to SafeAssign in BB Vista and upload your preliminary and extended reports to BB Vista in the Assignments sections.
  • Due dates on course calendar.
Preliminary report: November 22nd

Introduction:
Oil pumps are a critical part of an automotive system. Lu
icating oil is fed by a
pump through pipes or ducts to different mating parts of an engine to slow down wear
and tear due to friction between metal parts and for possible heat displacement. The type
of oil pump used in an automotive engine depends on the engine structure, the type of
drive and its lu
ication requirements. In an oil burning plant the oil must be filtered and
e subjected to a stable pressure of higher order. The oil flow in a burner
plant/automotive system must start and stop accurately in step with the requirements
made on it. The oil pump must be so designed to ca
y out these functions.
There are many types of pumps used in industries based on need and application,
to explain a few Centrifugal pumps, Piston pumps, Gear pumps etc., Centrifugal pumps
are mainly used to circulate liquid for example, hot water in a central heating system.
This type of pump is not self-priming. Liquid enters at the centre of the pump and is flung
y the rotating impeller out to the walls of the pump housing. In this way pressure is built
up at the outlet of the pump. Piston pumps are used to transport liquid where a particular
high pressure is required at the pump outlet. An example is where feed water must be
supplied to a steam boiler. As and when, the piston travels upwards the water above it
will be forced into the boiler. At the same time, the suction created below the piston
sucks water from the condensed water tank into the pump. When the piston travels
downwards the flap valve lifts and water flows into the space above the piston so that the
pumping process can be repeated at the next stroke of the pump. Gear pumps are used
where good suction and good pressure characteristics are required for example in an oil
urning plant. The simplest type of gear pump contains two...
