Something that is a necessary (but not sufficient) condition on something else. For example: being at least 35 years old is a necessary condition on becoming president of the U.S. – but it is not sufficient (you also have to get elected).
Something that is a sufficient (but not necessary) condition on something else. For example: owning a dog is a sufficient condition on owning a pet – but it is not necessary (you could own a cat instead of a dog, and still own a pet).

Necessary but not sufficient
Certain conditions are necessary and others are sufficient. When something is required but not enough for a consequence it is said to be necessary but not sufficient.
