Introduction:
Material, apart from the water contained in liquid portion, is classified as solid matter. The existence of solid matter in
potable, natural, and industrial waters can affect the ability of organisms to survive. Waters with high dissolved solids
normally are of lesser palatability and can stimulate an adverse physiological reaction in the transient consumer. Water
high in suspended solids may be aesthetically unacceptable for such purposes as bathing. So, Solids analyses are vital in
the control of biological and physical wastewater treatment processes and for assessing fulfillment with regulatory
organization in wastewater effluent limits.
Background of this experiment:
In present times, near the Southlake subdivision in Mobile, Alabama; a newly set up chemical plant discharges treated
wastewater into a lake (figure in lab manual is refe
ed). Residents in Area B are complaining that their lake water is
cloudier than the lake water in Area A and the chemical plant should be responsible for the cloudy lake water. As an
environmental engineer student the objective has become to detect whether the lake water in area B has a higher
solids concentration than the lake water in area A or not.
