For this paper, you should write a brief paper about just one (and no more than one) counseling theory, using the category headings:

  • General philosophical basis, or view of human nature
  • Normal behavior or development
  • What is problem behavior, or how do problems develop?
  • How do people change / grow / improve / overcome?
  • Therapeutic Relationship / what is the role of the counselor?
  • What are some examples of techniques from this theory, or what does it look like in practice?

If you put those headings down in a document, you have your paper outline.

Some considerations for the above:

  1. How do the identities of counselor and client factor into these categories? (You don't need to address this for every category, but some theories have limitations or strengths due to their applicability to people of a given identity).
  2. This paper should have at least 2 PEER REVIEWED primary APA citations. Citations should be primary sources, not secondary sources (unless it is impossible to cite a primary source). For example:
    • Good example: Person-Centered theory focuses on conditions of the counselor-client relationship (Rogers, 1951).
    • What not to do: Person-Centered theory focuses on conditions of the counselor-client relationship (Corey, 2020).
    • You can use a secondary source, but it will not count toward the 2 primary sources.
  3. No title page or abstract is required.
  4. ** NO REFERENCE PAGE REQUIRED***
  5. This should be double-spaced, in APA format, and use paragraphs, and not bullet points. You can use headings from the outline above, but you are not required to. Do not include an abstract page. Do not include a title page or reference page. Use A MINIMUM OF 2 PEER REVIEWED CITATIONS for this mini-paper.

Adlerian theory
General philosophical basis, or view of human nature:
People have certain desires that they want to fulfil and certain goals that they want to accomplish. The process of satisfying their desires and reaching their goals vary from person to person depending on their character (personality) and circumstances (environment).
Normal behavior or development:
Normal human behavior is goal oriented and is influenced by the need to feel that they are significant and the need to feel a sense of connection or belonging.
What is problem behavior, or how do problems develop?:
Adlerian theory was given by Alfred Alder in 1923 in his book Understanding Human Nature. This theory does not consider any ‘bad or abnormal’ behavior as psychologically abnormal behavior. It acknowledges the fact that people undergo difficult experiences sometimes even traumatic situations and discouragements (social, financial or general) that can cause inferiority feelings (Alder, 1923) and psychological problems. Psychological problems lead to social disconnection and isolation that creates disempowerment or feelings of helplessness in people. Therefore, people struggle to cope with negative feelings, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, eating disorders and in extreme cases personality disorders.
How do people change / grow / improve / overcome?:
According to Adlerian theory (Alder, 1923), people can be empowered or their situation can be changed for better by exposing them to community interactions/ involvements and rebuilding their social relationships so that they can gain confidence and make better choices for...
