Assignment I: Your Food Voice
This paper is a requirement for the course. Students who do not submit a paper will automatically receive a grade of F for the course.
Objective:
Students will explore the development of their food voice as influenced by
1. Their cultural background.
2. Their friends, the food industry and food availability.
Assignment: Your Food Voice (3 pages total)
Students will reflect on their personal experience to explain their food voice.
The development of your food voice:
1. Introduction: (½ page) Identify the cultural group that you associate with based on your birthplace or that of your parents and grandparents.
2. Development of your Food Voice: (1½ pages) Explain what you learned about your food culture from your parents/adult guardians:
a. Core and complementary foods - Traditional foods that are commonly eaten daily
. Peripheral foods - (Traditional foods eaten at holidays or for cele

c. Medicinal foods - Traditional foods/spices/he
s used for medicinal purposes.
3. Influences on your Food Voice: (1page) Explain how you have maintained the food traditions of your culture or how your food voice has changed:
a. Influence of the food industry (processed foods, food commercials, fast food),
. Influence of food availability (ethnic foods, large supermarkets, small markets, food deserts)
c. Influence of friends (adding or trying new foods or eliminating foods)
