Introduction

You will research and write on an assigned topic related to technology and its impact(s) on society. Your submission, on Turnitin, will be a short paper (8-10 pages in length, not including references and the abstract pages, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, one inch margins).


Your objective is to illustrate and discuss, in your own words, how a single technology, or type of technology, can have a significant impact on society and transform the way society functions economically, socially, and/or politically. Additionally, these significant impacts may be related to the health and welfare of the society or the environment. The impacts should be far-reaching, and not local in nature. Examples of significant achievements can be found on the National Academy of Engineering website (www.greatachievements.org). You may use this website as a starting point for your assigned topic, but you must incorporate at least three other reputable (credible) sources in your report.


You must choose a specific title from the list of general topics below. Please select one (1) topic that is within your category.

Use appropriate academic sources. This is a research paper, and not an opinion-based paper. Thus, you must use references to support your points, and the references must be properly incorporated into the body of your paper. You are required to employ the APA citation and referencing system prescribed for this class as presented on the Purdue Owl Writing Lab website


Instructions

The result of this assignment, which you will submit through the Turnitin system, will be a short but formal research paper. It is expected that you will use the tools you have learned in class that are related to: proofreading, referencing, writing style, organization, and academic writing expectations. This is an argumentative paper – not simply an expository presentation of information. You are making a case – how and why a particular technological development has been significant. You are expected to demonstrate your ability to critically think when analyzing the technology as it relates to society. Therefore, you MUST provide a problem statement in the form of a research question(s) or probationary hypothesis early in your introduction. The body of the paper should be 8-10 pages in length, double-spaced. This length is for the content (from Introduction to Conclusion) and does not include the abstract and references. The font should be 12 points, Times New Roman. The margins should be one inch (or 2.54 cm) on the top, bottom and both sides.

1. Introduction of the Technology: the Smartphone
The Smartphone is defined as a cellphone that allows you to
owse the internet and run software applications similar to a computer in addition to phone calls and sending text messages. The Smartphone has a touch screen that allows users to interact with the interface. The Smartphone features include the following:-

· Receive phone call text messages
· Being able to take, share and store pictures and video from the front facing and back facing camera

· Being able to use GPS for locating the phone and navigating
· Being able to record audio and play music
· Being able to function as a alarm clock, calendar alert and reminders

· Being able to take notes through voice dictation
· Being able to use virtual assistant such as Siri, Google and Cortant
· Being able to access utilities such as flashlight, eBook reader
Smartphone are similar to a computer and have operating systems. The most common operating systems are IOS, Android, Blackbe
y and Windows. The storage is flash memory that is built into the system and it is non-removable. The first Smartphone was developed by IBM in 1992 (Hatamian, 2020). It was a prototype with features similar to Maps, news feeds and stock quotes. The prototype led to an improved version released to the market in 1994 called Simon Personal Communicator. This device had the capabilities of a Smartphone and had applications such as a calculator, calendar and notepad.
2. Society Functioning Prior to the Popularization of Smartphone
Society before Smartphone was very complicated. Smartphone have made communication easier and helped to simplify various processes. The Smartphone has become a single device that can perform activities that once required so many various different devices.
The first device that existed pre-Smartphone was Basic Cell Phones and Landlines. Landlines and Cellphones required phone numbers to be written down and memorized. It had no way to store contacts. It also was hard to type due to the basic keyboard that required buttons to be pressed multiple times to type a certain number or letter. The second device is fax machines. Fax machines were used to deliver urgent news instantly in a time where text messages and emails did not exist.
The scanning of documents was faxed and it lacked the security that email now provides (Dennison, Mo
ison, Conway & Yardley, 2017). The third device is CD players or radios. These devices were used to play music. People had to purchase CDs and audio cassettes to listen to their favorite artists and music. They were introduced to musicians through the radio that played the music.
The fourth device was cameras. Photo taking was reserved for occasions and vacations. People could not click pictures of the day to day, as it would be a waste of film. The picture was then taken to a shop where it was developed. Cameras are still used today but they rely more on digital storages and are high resolution cameras used for media and entertainment.
The way information was consumed in society before the Smartphone was also quite different. Information was not easily available to the public. The public had to rely on encyclopedias and li
aries for information. Cookbooks were used to learn recipes and people only had access to information in their area and their circle. The knowledge of other countries and their politics were mostly based on what was published in the newspaper. Bills were often paid in person or through postal services. This increased the possibility of checks being lost or stolen.
The way people interacted was very different. It was very difficult to stay in touch with people when they moved a
oad and often the mode of communication was long distance calls and emails. This means the chance of seeing people from the past was limited and often most people lost touch. Children tend to go outside and play more as there were no modes of entertainment in the house (Manzoni, Maniloff, Kloeckl & Ratti, 2017).
3. Society Functioning after the Popularization of Smartphone
Smartphone have changed the way people communicate, consume information and the way, they live their lives. Smartphone have become a prime aspect of a person’s lives. From schools to offices, this technology is used for communication and sharing of information. In schools, it is used to communicate with peers and teachers.
