Introduction to deforestation:
Over thirty per cent of the land surface of Earth is covered by forests which can provide medicines, fuel and food for millions of people. In the worldwide forest sectors, more than thirteen million people have jobs; almost forty one million people have jobs which are related to the forests. The permanent removal of trees and the wild in order to make room for something other than forests is known as deforestation. This may include clearing the forests for grazing or agriculture, or making use of the timber for manufacturing, construction or fuel. Although forests are filled with huge resources, they also are undeveloped large swaths of Earth which can be transposed for certain purposes like grazing and agriculture. According to the National Geographic, during the years between 1600s and late 1800s almost half the forests in the Eastern part of North America were cut down for farming and timber. In the present time, most of the deforestation is occu
ing in the tropical areas. The areas which were inaccessible before are now being within reach as roads are being established amongst the dense forests. A 2017 study by the scientists of the Maryland University showed that in 2017 alone more than sixty thousand square miles of forests were cut down which an area similar to the size of Bangladesh is.
Stakeholders and their requirements:
Paper mills and factories:
The paper mill industry involves a large number of stakeholders who are connected to it for their livelihood including labourers, factory workers, employees of marketing organisations and the authorities. This sector produces glossy paper, catalogue paper, tissue, paper based packaging and all other types of paper that uses more than 40% of wood that are traded globally for industrial purposes. Unsustainable pulp and paper operations by these factories have led to devastating impacts on the world's most ecologically important forests. Paper mills contribute heavily to deforestation, as it has been stated by the Global Forest Resource Assessment of 2018 that every day, around 80,000 to 160,000 are cut in which a significant share is used for the production of paper.
Wood products and houses:
The industry of wood products and houses involves furniture makers and carpenters who might work independently or through contract with a company. These industrial sectors, due to the popularity and demand of its products have a huge number of stakeholders who are dependent on wood, mainly Timber to earn their livelihood. The increasing demand has led to unsustainable and illegal logging in forests, all over the world violating national laws. Use of tropical timber by industrial countries is one of the significant reasons behind tropical deforestation. Building wooden houses requires way more wood than any other wooden product contributing enormously to deforestation at the present environmental scenario.
Construction and companies:
Construction companies of roadways have a chain of stakeholders from manual labourers, engineers, and employees authorise, etc. building roadways also makes communication and trade easier. Construction of roadways can cause deforestation by providing a path way to enter previously remote land. For example, the Interoceanic Highway that runs from Peru to Brazil is concerning as it cuts a strip through the Amazon rainforest.
