1.Part of my Indian culture is sitting down together to eat dinner after a long day at work. I did not live with my grandmother after the age of 6, but every time I went over, she knew exactly what to feed me. One of my favorite dishes of hers was a sweet rice pudding. She used to feed it to me, nice and hot, right off the stove. When I went away to college and lived by myself, I called her to ask her how she made it. She was so specific in her directions, but instead of making enough for 1 person, I made enough for 8 people! This memory is so strong to me because we connected over this simple recipe that was connected to my childhood and we both laughed about it when it was brought up. My grandmother passed away in February and now whenever I taste this dish, it brings back that memory of me standing in my kitchen on the phone with her, imagining her annoyed with me for not making it right, but I could still hear the patience and love she had for me, in her voice. The parts of the brain that become interconnected when I taste this rice pudding are the amygdala and the hippocampus that are linked to emotional behavior and the hippocampus, respectively. I have a happy memory attached to this food, so usually, I feel pretty happy and comforted when I eat it. On the other hand, there is a type of dessert she tried to feed me, and we got into an argument after I would not eat it. I still do not eat this dessert because I honestly just feel sad about arguing with her over something so small.
2.is it the food or the emotions that bring up the memory?
