The American War of Independence: A Just War?
For centuries the concept of “just war” has remained one of the most contested concepts.
Both skeptics and rationalists have asked the question repeatedly that is it possible for any war to
e ever called just? The answer is not so simple and to justify the entire issue primarily one has
to learn about the definition of a “just war”. It is to be mentioned that for a war to be called a
“just war” six pivotal conditions must be satisfied by it, and these six conditions are that the war
must be for a just cause, it must be lawfully declared by a lawful authority, there must be good
intentions behind such war, it should be the ultimate step forced to be taken after the failure of all
other peaceful measures, a reasonable chance of success must be there at the end of the war and
the means used in the war must be proportionate to the end that the war tries to accomplish
(“What is a Just War?”, n.d.). The primary endeavor in this paper is to establish the view that
keeping in mind the conditions of a “just war” the American War of Independence to a great
extent cannot thoroughly be stated as a “just war” and it should be argued that the cause of the
War was not thoroughly just and neither was the intention behind the War was comprehensively
good.
