  • Date of submission: w/b Monday 3rd December 2018, Week 10

We have been studying Critical Management Studies (CMS). CMS analyses management and organisations from a ‘critical’ perspective, which often critiques management rather than praising it, and draws attention to overlooked and ignored aspects of organisations and the way they are managed.

Task:

Choose ONE of the Critical Theories (CT) we have studied, or ONE CT from the longer list in our main textbook by Tadajewski.

Choose ONE UK-based Public Limited Company (PLC), preferably a creative one (e.g. a media / broadcasting company, a publishing company, a fashion company, or a music company, etc.)

Using, applying, and referring to your chosen Critical Theory (CT), your task is to explain the CT further, demonstrate how it can be used to analyse management in the wider world, and show how our CT relates closely to the PLC of your choice.

Highly visual, with images, charts, graphs, tables, and hyper-links to websites, video, or audio.

Introduction
The quality of management determines the productive outcome of organisations and therefore, due credit is given to the management. However, over time, reception of effective feedbacks, make the management ignore the areas of improvement and new risks. In case of critical management studies, the organisational managements are criticised for their existing as well as proposed managerial ventures and strategies, giving in very little appreciation of the positive aspect of the strategic implementation. Despite the initial dissatisfaction, the managements of organisations can improve their performance manifold, considering the criticism as an effective way of collecting feedbacks. The critical theories act as the parameters of evaluation action of organisations and judge them based on, social science fundamentals. In the cu
ent study, the use of technology for the production of musical instruments at Gear4music Plc, UK has been criticised using the Marxist Critical Theory, which refers to the wider context of the socio-economic imbalance in the world.
An overview of Marxist Critical Theory
The Marxist Critical Theory is very different from that of traditional critical theories that consider explaining the functionality of change, while the Marxist Critical Theory aims at changing the society as a whole. The Marxist Critical Theory proposes the idea that the rigid economic frame and centralised economies on the global scale tend to make the people involved in the lower section of the society enslaved to the need of money, undermining the process of equality of economic status and classless social formation. As noted by Parker (2009), Marxist Critical Theory proposes revolutionising the social frame so that labours get more share of the generated profit, making the gap between the rich and the poor lesser. Marxist Critical Theory, as stated by Veltmeyer (2018), criticised any actions taken by the employers, which benefit profitability scales, but undermines the scope of employability of employees. As an example it is seen that in the modern world of business, technology is used for increasing production rate without recruiting many employees, churning out profit, which as per Marxist Critical Theory is exploitation of socialism and indulgence to capitalism.
