Skin is an important part of the cutaneous system that is vital for survival. The various functions of the skin are; acting as a ba
ier, physical protection for external environment, flexibility for motion, temperature regulation, sensory perception, storage secretion, excretion, and many more.
Layers of Skin
Skin is composed of three different layers of epidermis, dermis and hypodermis.
The epidermis contains numerous layers called strata. This forms to be the outer layer of the skin which is made up of dead skin cells.
Dermis lies below the epidermis and contents a mechanoreceptor that helps in responding to the stimuli like pressure, stretching, and vi
ation. This layer of the skin provides strength and flexibility. It consists of collagen fibers, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, a
ector pilli muscles, hair follicles, and ground substances. The ground substance consists of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans. Several cells are found in the dermis which helps to form collagen and mast cells that release histamine, heparin, and other inflammatory mediators in response to injury or pain.
