General Directions:
A. Log into Americanrhetoric.com, find the list of “Top 100 Speeches” by rank, and read the following speech identified below. There may also be a sound file available.
Remarks on the Assassination of MLK, by Robert Kennedy (rank = 7)
B. After reading, respond to each of the three prompts below. Support for your analysis / responses should come from the speech. no outside research should be used.
1. In one concise paragraph, identify and describe the “general purpose” and “specific purpose” for this speech. In other words, what is the genre (informative, persuasive, etc.) of the speech, and what does the speaker want to accomplish with it?
2. In one concise paragraph, characterize the assumptions the speaker has made about occasion and audience for this speech. What does the text of the speech reveal about the speaker’s strategic decisions about audience?
3. In one concise paragraph, identify examples in the text of the speech that illustrate the rhetorical triangle (Speaker-Ethos, Speech-Logos, Audience-Pathos).
