Introduction
The analysis of “a street car named desire” is undertaken to know the modernist ideology, and qualities of the story to define this. The play ‘streetcar named desire is written by the Tennessee Williams and for this the author has received coveted Pulitzer Prize for drama in the year of 1948. This play is regarded as one of the finest drama of the 20th century. The drama shows the confrontation between the characters Dubois and Staley Kowalski. The confrontation started growing. The confrontation between these two characters reveals the two different world of clashing personalities. The aristocratic name Dubois is strikingly different from the name of Kowalski that refers a common man. The clashes between these two often portrayed characteristics features such as Dubois softly attitude and wincing while Kowalski loud and
utal behaviour. Dubois is interested to participate in the cocktails, teas and luncheons while the Stanley depends on expressing his likes and dislikes. Blanche considers values are prominent facts while Kowalski assumes money is the key for happiness. Kowalski confronts with Blanche over his priority for money. Colour choices of both personalities also differ considerably. Stanley prefers to use vividness in colour choice but Blanche does not like deep colours and prefers pastels or white. Love is also considered by these personalities in different ways. For Kowalski, the love is a physical desire and is a physical act of love only. But Blanche feels that someone should fulfil not only the physical desires but offer protection and certainly her love definition is on the higher level than Stanley’s. She wants communication apart from physical love to gain devotion from her partner and seeks spiritual needs.
Modernist ideology
Modernist ideology or modernism has taken into shape in nineteenth and in early twentieth century’s. There are many qualities that define modernism but one of the most important traits is unresolved ending and this is trait clearly visible in the William’s play. Modernism of modernist ideology differs from the traditional and classical forms. The modernist generally takes a rebellious stand against the old norms.
