● Begin by identifying the idea of "Freedom" in your chosen text. How is this word
defined?
● Then, choose ONE of the following to focus on that is related to your understanding of
how Freedom is defined in the text (the idea is that your essay has more of a focal point.
Choose something that is seen/used throughout the whole text - something that is

text’s time period (history)? Use what you’ve learned in your history course and
your outside research to support your analysis.
○ How does your chosen focus from your chosen text inform your definition of
freedom? If it does not, why not?
Requirements
1. Write an essay that is 5-6 pages in length (but not more than 7) analyzing your chosen
focus, using all of the questions listed above to help in your analysis.
2. MLA Formatting - there is a reference guide on Bb under Course Documents.
3. Quotes from your chosen text about your chosen focus.
4. Works Cited Page!
5. Use the “Primary Source” (your chosen text) extensively in your literary analysis
a. This is no different from the Reading Responses - see, you’ve had practice!
2. 3-4 “Secondary Sources” (outside sources). The recommendation is that you use
whichever sources you have / will have chosen for your history portion. Use these
sources to contextualize your chosen text and help you to define “Freedom”.
