Your Thoughts on Testing Drugs in the Developing World
1. Several critics of the drug companies have claimed that the companies’ practice of testing drugs on poor people in developing countries violates principles of justice. Why would they say this? Which principles of justice would be involved?
Principles of justice are indeed violated by the practice of drug companies to test drugs on poor people in developing countries. This is because the poor in the developing countries are often illiterate and do not understand the risks involved in the trials. According to the two elements of the principle of justices discussed by Alperovitch et al. (2009) which are equality and equity, both are compromised in this situation. Where equality refers to the equal treatment of all and providing everyone with the same opportunities of treatment, the drug companies use the ignorance and lack of resources of grieved patients in poor countries and subject them to drugs and tests which they wouldn’t accept otherwise. Respect for people’s rights (rights-based justice) is totally ignored in this situation and they are exploited due to their ignorance and poverty.
2. Some critics of the drug companies have argued that the doctors that have agreed to participate in the drug trails have violated the requirements of the ethics of care. Explain why these critics are right or why they are wrong.
The critics are right in that the doctors participating in such trials are insensitive to the need of their patients and do not consider that their choice of enrolling a patient in the clinical trial can impact the life of the patient in a really adverse manner. They do not care about safeguarding or promoting the interest of the patients they have involved in...
