1. A COMPARISON STUDY – things to consider… A full description of what you
heard, comparing and contrasting the 4 movements from the symphony you
choose to analyze. Use specific information (terms, etc.) that you have learned
from the course in your descriptions. A majority of your paper should be a
description of what you heard and a comparison of the similarities and
differences between the movements of the symphony you choose to analyze.
Use these five categories to compare the four movements of the symphony (one
movement at a time):
1. Tonality – Major or minor tonality?
2. Tempo – fast, slow, moderate, gradually changing (Note: each movement is named
a tempo marking)
3. Meter – duple, triple, or quadruple
4. Dynamics – loud, soft, gradually changing?
5. Articulation – accent, staccato, sforzando, tenuto, fermata, legato?
6. Background information that you find about the composer and the symphony
you are analyzing on the Internet. After you read information about the symphony,
watch the performance (YouTube). Then write your analysis. And don’t forget to
cite your sources at the end of the comparison study.
COPY AND PASTE THE URL FROM EACH WEBSITE WHERE YOU FOUND THE
INFORMATION AT THE END OF THE REPORT. I must be able to verify your
information by using the URL, so be sure it is complete.
3. WRITING STYLE: Grammar, spelling, syntax, rhetoric and addressing all of the
guidelines as listed above.
4. How will the report be graded?
The report MUST contain the following:
• The title of the symphony and the composer.
• Write one paragraph on the composer of the work
• List each of the four movements and analyze each movement separately. Then
compare each movement with the other movements.
• Cite your sources at the end of the paper
5. How should the report be formatted?
• Typed, average size font (11-12), double-spaced.
• Minimum: Approximately three to four pages. Maximum: No limit! (Points will be
deducted for reports shorter than three pages).
• DO NOT USE PICTURES OR GRAPHICS OF ANY KIND in this report.
• Do not use bullet points to describe the elements of a piece in your paper;
emember this is an essay!
• Weight: This comparison study/analysis paper counts 10% toward your final grade
in the course.
6. How To Submit Your Report
• Submit your report through our CANVAS class. It uses VeriCite for plagiarism. DO
NOT copy directly from the Internet. The ENTIRE paper MUST be in your own
words. It is strongly suggested that you type your paper using a word processor
such as MSWord, making sure that you save your work as you go along. Do not
type in the textbox; instead have your report saved as a document. The document
formats you can upload are txt, doc, and pdf, as well as jpg, gif and tif. Google
docs and Pages docs are not acceptable.
7. How to prepare for the concert listening experience
• Look up information on the composer, musical style and, the symphony you are
analyzing ahead of time. Use the Internet or reference sources (books, articles, etc.)
in the Music Lab on campus or online. Be sure to CITE your sources (ie: URL, book
article, etc) or points will be deducted. (NOTE: Using someone else’s material as
your own is considered plagiarism and is a violation of the college academic
honesty code and may result in a grade of 0%.)

Symphony #40 by Mozart: A Brief Description
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed symphony 40 in the year 1788. It is considered as one the best symphonies in G minor and portrays an artistic movement Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) which highlight darker side of the emotions. As indicated by Bowen, this reflects strong emotions through musical elements give audience a sense of grief, tragedy or some feelings, which are passionate.
It is one of the classical symphonies using sonata form and was able to create deep influence on future composers. The choice of keys was so intense, unconventional and chaotic that it depicts the work profundity. According to Liu, musicians believe that this symphony is looking forward either to Romanticism or backward to Baroque.
This symphony is felt more relevant to Mozart’s mood swings or those emotions, which are not relatable. It is interesting to note that this symphony was written for fairly small orchestra with no percussion. It is one of the most played symphony on televisions and concerts.
Comparative Study of Four Movements
1. Molto Allegro
Tonality: Then overall movement is in G minor. It opens up in G minor and then moves to B flat major.
Tempo: The first movement is very fast. The opening is quaver accompaniment of the violas and notes from the basses.
Meter: 4/4
Dynamics: It has quiet subject. The tempo marking is p (‘piano’ or ‘soft’)
Articulation: The notes values are doubling as codetta.
