Vocational Scenario or Context | Scenario You are employed as an Assistant Planning Advisor and you have been tasked with producing a report which summaries the planning and design phases of converting an existing grade II and II* listed buildings into a number of domestic dwellings. The site you will be producing a report on is ‘The Loom Cotton Site’ situated within Ancoats conservation area. The site compromises of existing buildings and is currently identified as Murrays’ Mills complex, located along Redhill, Murray and Jersey Streets, and an additional new build block along the Bengal Street side. |

Task 1 | Planning and Design Phase Produce a reportwhich outlines the design and planning phases of the specified proposed project. This must be supported by illustrative images/diagrams a) For this project you are required to discuss issues that may occur with gaining planning approval and highlight legal constraints which may affect the planning process. Your report should cover the following areas: · Outline the planning process · Relevant planning legislation · Building Regulations and Building Control · Foreseen issues that may occur with gaining planning approval. · Legal constraints which may affect the planning process. (LO 1.1) Your answer must be related to the scenario b) Discuss the design phase of the project. Your report should cover the following areas: · RIBA Plan of Work · Change of use considerations · Relevant Legislation · The influence of the design · Structural Considerations · Life Cycle cost planning (LO 1.2) Your answer must be related to the scenario c) Provide an evaluation of how the planning and design phases may be managed and co-ordinated, your answer must include stages from Initiating to Closing. (LO 1.3) For M1 An effective approach to study and research has been applied: You must include a variety of sources of information which are fully referenced to an academic standard e.g. Harvard Referencing |

Task 2 | Building Services and Material Specification Produce a report using information on The Loom Cotton Site which includes the following: · Examine the factors that will affect the specification of materials and building services. · Evaluate the way in which building services can be integrated into the overall conversion of the existing mill · Providing an explanation of the financial implications of the materials specified and the building services applied. Key areas to consider: factors including build-ability, design constraints, site and manufacturing, cost implications and maintenance and discuss the factors specifically related to the materials specification, including the financial consequences of specifying materials and building services. For D1: conclusions have been arrived at through synthesis of ideas and have been justified: You must provide a conclusion which summarises your findings relating to each area which is included in you report for task 2. This should justify the concepts disused in relation to the specification of materials and building services. |
