The Signifying Monkey is one of the literary criticism and theory work by the American Scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. In the book by Gates Jr (2014), the word signifying closely related to the trickery and the double talk that has been used by the Monkey for these narratives. It is a practice of representing an idea that is indirectly represented through a commentary that is more often humorous along with insulting or provocative in nature. The author further argues that the pervasiveness and centrality of signify in the African as well as African American literature and music is the manner in which signifies all kinds of dialogue which is associated with the literature and music of the past. This can be considered as kind of insult for the African people.
