Summarize and compare the following items as they relate to decision making: perception, selective perception, halo effect, and contrast effect.

Perception is an important element in the decision-making process. It involves evaluating sensory impressions of the environment around us. Behavior is based on how someone perceives what reality is in any given situation, and not on reality itself. The first thing I think of with perception is, eye-witness testimonies of a crime. It is extremely common to have five eye-witnesses, each with a different account of what happened. They will make decisions based on what they saw or heard. Did they see something relevant to the crime, are they able to provide a general description of a suspect?
Selective Perception is when a certain characteristic sticks out to increase the probability that it will be seen. The human mind is incapable of analyzing everything we see at one time; and therefore, we selectively interpret what we see based on interests, background, experience, and attitudes. In decision making, selective perception is applied when individuals selectively consider certain factors before deciding.
The Halo Effect is when one characteristic
ings out a positive impression. This is opposite the Horn Effect which
ings out a negative impression from one characteristic. In relation to decision making, people will make a decision based on that one impression.
The Contrast Effect is a form of perception that results from previous exposure to something of lesser or greater quality, but of the same base characteristics. Decisions will be made on the quality comparison of the base characteristics. For example are you going to buy a car that is far above your price range, or a car of the same or similar characteristics, that is only a little above your price range?

As part of the global process in decision making, being able to make ethical decisions is very important. An example of this would be to understand the many different cultures across the world. Ethical decision making is very important in organizations and is very imperative for ethical decisions to be made within organizations. What may be considered the ‘right’ in one culture may not be considered in another. Some cultures have a different background in decision making in which the decision making may depend on their beliefs, values, and morals. It is very important to understand the different cultures especially when it comes to organizations because this can help prevent unethical decisions from being made. On the final note, an individual has to be open minded as to think that what ever their decision making counts for, may not always be the ethical way in sight of others. One’s cultural background has a great influence on their decision making.
