Wind and solar energy are too expensive and too unreliable to ever fully replace fossil fuel
Abstract:
The advancement in battery storage and availability of increased energy density from these storage systems changed the government and public view/opinion on renewable energy systems. In past decades battery operated heavy machineries are considered as non-viable option but cu
ent proved those wrong by giving reliable supply of energy from renewable sources[Adam et al. 2017]. Since the renewable segment is still in infancy which will consume more energy and resource to gain stable platform of efficiency in operations which is only 15% capacity in range when compared to 75-85% capacity of efficient fossil fuels. The unbiased presentation in this task had given us the conclusion that renewables gain stable traction on mix of wind and solar power in grid instead of sourcing as single point of source[Bolinger et al. 2015]. In long run wind and solar energy are much cheaper than fossil fuels and clean but will impact more on resource in initial few decades to reach sustainable renewable energy source.
Introduction:
The fossil fuel is a gifted source of energy by nature to humanity which are contributed by many zillions of dead carcasses which gets decomposed to oil source for millions of years. Fossil fuel is a finite source and it’s in verge of extinction due to over exploitation by humanity in the name of industrial development [Bertani et al. 2005]. The estimation on cu
ent fossil reserve will last us for next few centuries and once gets depleted will take another millions of years to rejuvenate. The fossil fuel includes petroleum, coal, oil shales, bitumen’s, natural gas, heavy oils and tar sands, these contributed a base foundation for the industrial and technological development for human community. The cheap available coal is a first source of fossil fuel used in pre-industrial development followed by crude oil an upstream based product and over 90% of energy source comes from fossil fuel till to date.
The technological development paved way for untapping the potentials of renewable sources and list includes Solar, Wind, Hydro, CNG, Geothermal, Tidal, Radiant and Biogas among these Wind and Solar energy tops the list with its reliable power supply and cheaper in long run[Bertani et al. 2005]. In this task we focus on Wind and Solar due to its reliability in achieving GW (giga watts) of energy across the globe due to its abundance supply of sunshine and wind source. The other renewable sources are efficient than these two but their availability in resource terms are limited to operation to particular region.
Wind and Solar energy:
Across the globe many nations are racing towards development of sustainable renewable resource to cut down their ca
on footprint which is heavily tolling their own country health, one such particular example is china which uses fossils heavily to lead in technology and innovation but also risked its own people’s health to severe category[Blanco et al. 2009]. Among list of countries Afghanistan, Albania, China, Costa Rica, and India tops the globe in adoption of Wind and Solar energy, where Costa Rica is the first country to achieve 90% of its country grid to depend on renewable source by mix of energy and only 10% diesel generators are used for back up in low renewable produce state.
Costa Rica is also been the first such country to run on 100% renewable source grid for 94 days without
eak and hoping to achieve round the year state by the end of 2020. Albania is small country in Europe but had achieved significant reliance on renewable source with the help of government new policy as it’s the only country in Europe region to have more sunshine in a year[Gagnon et al. 2002]. Afghanistan took a globe surprise in renewable development since it was targeted by extremities, decentralization of its power grid had helped private players to invest in solar and wind system since its hilly regions are having high source of wind and solar source. China and India are hungry for energy due to its high population and been invested heavily on Wind and Solar energy to achieve 20-30% reliance on renewable power source.
Recent years US and UK started to invest significant amount in solar farms and wind energy source, particular in UK 80% of public supports/favours solar energy when compared to other renewables and is contributing 3.5% to national grid expected to reach 10% by the end of 2024 as per...
