Assignment question

To research and to advise the team on one part of the project. The report will be used to develop your team recommendations to the client on the project.

Assignment steps

1. The team project should be subdivided into equally sized topics for each member of the team to research.

2. Each team member should research their chosen part of the team project using the scholarly literature and other relevant, reliable, or quality sources of information. As much as possible, original sources of information should be used.

3. You should write your report according to the instructions below and in workshops.

4. Additional information and support will be provided in the lectures and workshops for this assignment.

Assignment contents

The research briefing paper should be written as a technical report intended for other members of your group.

? You should state the purpose of the report and how that fits with your team project;

? summarize your findings from the research and your recommendations on this topic for the group project; and

? your recommendations should be supported by your research findings and relevant to your client.

The report must include an executive summary of up to 300 words. The executive summary is worth 25% of the total marks for the assignment.

You must show familiarity with the literature relating to your topic (for example, scholarly journal articles).

You must reference the work of other people (sufficient information for someone to find the source) and have a bibliography (reference list). APA6 is the preferred referencing style. The Library has a comprehensive guide to citing: http://www.library.unimelb.edu.au/cite/

Use tables, diagrams and other images that will add to the document. Figure headings and tables should be concise and referenced if necessary.

Marks will be deducted for unattributed similarity in reports to other sources or previously submitted work.

Assignment length

The report should be 2,000 words excluding the executive summary, bibliography andconcise figures and tables.

The executive summary should be not more than 300 words.

Marking criteria

Your Research Briefing Paper will be marked using the following criteria.

Executive Summary

5 marks

The executive summary should be informative, contain the purpose, findings and recommendations.

Argument for Recommendations

5 marks

The research should be fully referenced and support the argument in your own words. A deep understanding of the topic should be evident though the use of sufficient, quality references.

Recommendations

5 marks

The recommendations must be clear and concise. The recommendations proposed should relate to the report purpose and be supported by the findings presented in the paper.

Expression and Presentation

5 marks

The document should be written in professional English, with a high standard of expression and grammar. It should be structured through the use of headings and sections, and include any relevant tables or diagrams.

Executive Summary:
Purpose
The purpose of this report is to find out major ways in which oil contaminated soil in
kathiramangalam, Tamilnadu’s Kauvery Delta can be reduced.
Recommendations
In this report, two major recommendations have been provided for Remediation of oil-
contaminated soil in kathiramangalam. Only these two recommendations or strategies seemed to
e for this proposal. They are such as
1) Biological strategies for the remediation of PAHs
2) Chemical strategies for remediation of PAHs
Findings
Land firming: It is one of the most commonly used and inexpensive of PAH removal
from contaminated soil. It can help to reduce PAH by a) by adding ca
on sources and nutrients
) by mixing better with better distribute amendments and c) by adding soil at depth and d) by
increasing the chance of the microbial contacts with the contaminants. After nine weeks of the
implementation biological strategy for the remediation of PAHs, it had been found that PAH
eduction is much higher for LMW PAHs (40%- 80%) than for HMW PAHs (10%).There are
two types of land firming strategies has been used for this purpose. They are such as traditional
land firming of regular cultivation and gas phase composition-based cultivation strategy. It has
een found that both of these strategies have shown the same type of cultivation profile during
oth the phases (first phase and second phase). However, a plant or microbial combination
strategy has been proposed for the successful bio-remediation of heavily PAH contaminated soil
of kathiramangalam.
Photo-oxidation: In this process, PAHs are directly oxidized after they abso
sunlight
during photo oxidation. In this stage, they abso
photo oxidation more than 290 to 355 nm. The
chemical transformation and the rate of chemical transformation depend on the intensity of

sunlight, organic matter, overlapping spectral characteristics of the solar radiation. It helps to
transmit energy to the PAHs through the help of electron o
ital interactions.

June, Coastal Resource Centre has said that while extracting or refining of oil.
ONGC is well-leaked oil in the water and soil of Kathiramangalam, Tamil Nadu. After
examining the ground water, surface water and soil, it has been found that ONGC's hydroca
on
operation is contaminating the environment. Phytoremediation is a procedure where plants are
used to eliminate the soil contaminants (Ali, Khan & Sajad, 2013). There are various methods
used in this process, which includes phyto-accumulation and phyto-stabilization. The former
process uses plant leaves and shoots to store contaminants caused by metals and, in the second
procedure, chemical products that are produced by plants are used to halt the contaminants. For
this treatment method, specific plants are chosen that could abso
a large amount of lead.
Mustard plants, hemp, alpine pennycress and pigweed are good abso
ers of contaminants
(Pandey, 2012). Poplar trees are largely used by scientists in toxic waste sites. This treatment
method is also useful in reducing the effect of pesticides, fuels, volatile or semi-volatile and
explosives. Since last 20 years, this technology is utilized in many toxic waste sites, and, this
green technology has become increasingly popular. This is useful in the sites where the soil is
contaminated with lead, arsenic and uranium. This procedure is useful when soil or water
ecomes polluted or contaminated. The situation in Kathiramangalam, Tamil Nadu indicates that
the soil and water get polluted due to oil spills from ONGC wells. Seven samples gathered from
the delta region to study the contamination level, and, it has been found that oil has contaminated
the soil of the region with hydroca
on during extraction or oil refinement procedure.
Phytoremediation is a green technology that is applicable in situ and, it does not need a
large amount of excavation or extraction of contaminated soil. The topsoil remains undistu
ed
and could be used as it was usable in the past. This procedure uses solar energy and could be
easily applied. Phytoremediation is effective on a variety of metals, and, even radionucuclides
could be treated by this treatment method. Phytoremediation is useful for toxic waste sites,
which cannot be remediated by other methods. There are many species of plants that are used for
this process. The plants used for...
