ENGR-3011 STATICS 2
Assignment 2 – Part 1
(3% of Final Mark)
Scope:
 Find the Horizontal and Vertical Components of the applied forces, and neatly show
them on the Assignment Summary Sheet.
 Find the External Reactions for the truss supports, and neatly show them on the
Assignment Summary Sheet and Truss Diagram (together with all the forces,
angles and dimensions).
 All calculations are to be attached. Use the grid paper available on FOL (file called
“Assignment Calculation Sheets”).
Submission Due Dates:
 Week 10 – Part 1 is due for both sections at start of class Tuesday March 17, 2020
at 2pm in T1002 (marked Part 1 will be returned to all students on Friday March 20
at 2pm in B2035).
 25% of the mark will be deducted for submissions up to 24 hours late (use T3010
Drop Box #16), a mark of zero will be given to submissions over 24 hours late.
Submission Requirements:
 The first page shall be the summary sheet distributed in class complete with your
name and stapled with the truss diagram and the support calculations.
 All calculations and answers to 2 decimal places. All magnitudes shall be
positive. Show A
ows.
 Support Calculations shall follow on 8.5x11 “Assignment Calculation Sheets”.
 The calculations shall be presented in logical order, all pages should be numbered,
and the submission should be stapled in the top left hand corner.
 Each force/calculation shall have a labelled sketch of the force and the component
forces with directional a
ows, the angle and the support calculation for each
component (see “Example of Support Calculations” on the following page).
 You must show your Reaction Check, if any of this information is missing marks will
e deducted.
Marking Scheme (see marking pages posted FOL):
 Components of Forces: ½ mark Each 12 x ½ = 6 Marks
 Support reactions: 3 marks x 3 = XXXXXXXXXXMarks
 Direction of reaction: 1 mark x 3 = XXXXXXXXXXMarks
XXXXXXXXXXTotal = 20 Marks
 Subtract up to 4 marks for Presentation and Neatness of Calculations.
 Subtract up to 4 marks if no Check given, or not completed co
ectly.

ENGR-3011: STATICS 2 MAJOR TRUSS ASSIGNMENT
3 of 3

Assignment 2 – Part 2
(12% of Final Mark)
Scope:
 Perform a mathematical analysis of the truss in order to find the forces in all
members of the truss, and neatly show them on the Assignment Summary Sheet.
 Indicate whether each member is in Tension (T) or compression (C).
 All calculations are to be attached. Use the grid paper available on FOL (file called
“Assignment Calculation Sheets”).
Submission Due Dates:
 Week 14 – before start of Test #3 (Tuesday April 14, 2020 at 6pm in M2017).
 The final submission will be kept by the professor. Students may see the professor
in the office to look at their submission, but may not take them out of the office.
Submission Requirements:
 Use T3010 Drop Box #16 if you write in the Test Center.
 Follow the instructions on submission requirements provided for Part 1.
 This assignment is to be done using the General Method of Trusses (Method
of Joints and Method of Sections). A student starts out (if possible) using the
Method of Joints until he/she gets to a joint where there are two equations and two
unknowns to be solved for. When this occurs, you must switch to the Method of
Sections to solve for the unknown members instead of using two equations and two
unknowns. Once these unknown members have been solved by the Method of
Sections, you may switch back to the method of joints.
 If a student does not follow the above method, marks will be deducted for the
members solved by the inco
ect method.
 25% of the mark will be deducted for submissions up to 24 hours late (use T3010
Drop Box #16), a mark of zero will be given to submissions over 24 hours late.
 You must complete both assignments to pass the course.
Marking Scheme:
 Member Forces: 2 Marks Each 13 x 2 = XXXXXXXXXXMarks
 T or C indicated co
ectly: ½ mark each 13 x ½ = XXXXXXXXXXMarks
 Co
ect Method & Checks: 1 mark x 3 = XXXXXXXXXXMarks
 Presentation and Neatness = XXXXXXXXXXMarks
XXXXXXXXXXTotal = 68 Marks
 Subtract up to 16 Marks for poor presentation (see marking pages posted FOL).
