Assignment: Fraud Case Analysis 1

Purpose

To assess your ability to analyze a fraud case and prepare a fraud report.

Action Items

READ THE ARTICLE:

Dilla, W.N., Harrison, A.J., Mennecke, A.J., and Janvrin, D.J. (2013). The assets are virtual but the behavior is real: an analysis of fraud in virtual worlds and its implications for the real world. Journal of Information Systems 27(2), XXXXXXXXXX. (I have attached this article)

You are required to write out and submit the answers to the following:

a. According to the authors (Dilla et al.), the findings of their research "have real-world implications regarding the causes and prevention of fraud." To what extent are the following "causes of fraud"?

i. Perpetrator motivations

ii. Susceptibility of fraud victims

iii. Misplaced trust in “the system.”

iv. Record-keeping systems and documentation.

b. Compare/contrast "The Fraud Diamond" model (Dilla et al., p. 134) with the Cressey "Fraud Triangle" model. Which model do you prefer, i.e., which model is more effective, in your opinion, in explaining fraud?

c. Reflect and comment on the concept of fraud in the "virtual world," i.e., fraud that may not have a geographical time and place, but which occurs in a world that is beyond traditional rules and procedures of business and commerce. Is fraud in the virtual world a global issue? A cosmic issue? A non-issue (i.e., let the players beware!)?

d. Do you agree with the conclusions of Dilla et al., as summarized on pp XXXXXXXXXX? Why or why not?
