Introduction and History of Events
Events take place with the purpose of recreation, business or for cele
ating some causes. However, apart from these, events have their significance in
inging about positive changes and developments to where they are held. In Australia, events, belonging to the genres of music, have caused significant changes to the areas. Golden Gumleaf Awards, cultural festivals in Gold Coast and other similar events have enhanced not only the enthusiasm of the people of the country, but also the economic strength of the place (Gibson and Connell, 2012). This essay presents the regional developments resulted from events in Gold Coast, Australia.
Event Tourism and Re-Purposing of Events for Economic Development
Events have recently found a core purpose in their occu
ences in the form of being able to increase tourism activities of a place, where they occur. As mentioned by Gibson et al. (2010), when an event takes place at any area, there occurs a huge gathering, and people come together from different places. Sometimes, the popularity or the attraction of the event is so much that people from the other parts of the world, as well, attend it. These leads to the phenomenon known as event tourism, which has repurposed the events towards causing economic development to the place.
As supported by Boschat et al. (2015), when such a large number of people attend an event, all the economic sectors of the place are benefitted, such as the transportation sector, hospitality industry, handicrafts and healthcare. Therefore, economic development takes place as an outcome of the events. Not only that, the popularity of the events leads to the increased awareness of the culture of the place or the history that required attention. Therefore, it makes way to exploring the place, which is another source of economic development (Baker et al. 2015).
Sectors of the Events Industry
The events industry is subdivided into a number of sectors, such as the business events, festivals, charity or voluntary events, outdoor events, community events, social events, music and sports events (Liu and Wilkinson, 2014). Each of these events are conducted by the event organiser, who works under an event organising firm or owns one. However, as argued by Getz and Page (2016), the based on the purpose of organising the event, it can be funded by different entities, such as the government, private firms, community, artists, music companies, sports organisers, performers or simply the fans, who might only want to enjoy the events for their recreation.
