Introduction
Depression is one of the most common mental health disorder and results in debilitating condition many people in their day to day life are struggling to fight this illness. According to the WHO report, Depression is estimated to affect 350 million people around the globe (WHO, 2010). Depression is also regarded as most common illness worldwide as it is a mood disorder which is characterized by persistently low mood and constant feeling of sadness (Legg, 2017). Ironically, dealing with depression has been marked as one of the health priorities in many countries around the world as this problem is victimizing people of all age groups.
There are various reasons that result in depression and some of the possible are lack of emotional support, economic hardships, health problems etc. Some of the symptoms of depression include loss of energy, depressed mood, diminishing ability of thinking, feeling of worthlessness or guilt etc (Gray, 2014). People suffering from depression often prefer solitude over companionship and many people are known to face the problem of depression at some stage in their lifetime. Depression is therefore a serious disease and it can also lead to suicidal tendencies among the patients, the sickness can be treated by the clinical practitioners through intervention in collaborative manner.
The biopsychosocial model is regarded as one of the most accepted model for treating the people with depression. The model was developed by cardiologist Dr George Engle and it encourages the clinicians to explain the phenomena of depression by examining various factors that lead to the disease (Davison, 2012 ). The biopyschsocical approach has established very compassionate and empathetic approach in the medical field as it defines the factors which are related to ‘depression’. These factors are biological, psychological and social and it opposes the theory of just relying on the biological factors (Davison, 2012 ).
This biopsychosocial model can be used as a basis for the treatment of the patients suffering from depression. Various measures for treatment of depression are being adopted, from shamans’ ritual ceremony to molecular biology and neurosciences (Abdul-Missagh, 2015) all have been tried and the trained nursing management is considered to be an effective way for treatment of the victims. This paper therefore analyzes the case study on ‘Depression’ and discusses various biopsychosocial factors and the nursing management as to how it can help treat the victims of Depression.
