INSANE PATIENTS SOON TO GO OUTSIDE
Marshal Love is Perfecting A
angements to Send the Four Unfortunates to Oregon Asylum
as Soon as the Grand Jury Takes Action in the Case of Mrs Blanche Duvall – Deputation
With Marshal and Guards Will Make Large Party.
As soon as the grand jury has disposed of the case of Mrs Blanche Duvall, the insane
women who is now held here on the charge of killing former Chief of Police Al Miller, a
special deputation under charge of a deputy United States marshal and a number of guards
will be sent over the ice, conveying the four insane patients that are now in the federal jail
here to the insane asylum in Oregon.
In the case of Mrs Duvall, the action of the grand jury will probably be a formal acceptance of
the verdict of the jury that officially declared the women to be insane shortly after the crime
was committed.
Although a preliminary hearing was had before Commissioner Miller, and the women
a
aigned on the charge of murder, the subsequent hearing before the insane commission
will doubtless supersede the order of the court binding her over to the grand jury.
Marshal Love stated today that he was now perfecting plans for sending the patients outside
and that they will go over the trail shortly after the first of the year, if no hitch occurs in court
proceedings.
Besides Mrs Duvall, there are three men here who have recently been declared insane, but
against whom there are no charges. Of these William Winters is thought by the medical
authorities to be only partially unbalanced, and in such a condition that the right sort of
treatments in a sanitarium might restore his mental condition.
John Neimi and Andrew Svensrud are likewise susceptible to the right sort of treatment, with
good chances with at least partial recovery. The fact that these unfortunates cannot be
properly treated here, makes the matter all the more urgent, and no time will be lost in
getting them to the insane institution.
When the party is made up it will consist of a deputy marshal, a matron to look after Mrs
Duvall and several guards, as it is necessary that a day and night guard is maintained at all
times.
Mr Love stated that he would deputise such guards as wanted to go outside and were willing
to undertake the delicate task of handling the patients. These men will, of course, be paid
their experiences and a per diem for the trip, and it affords an opportunity for those who are
desirous of getting out, if they are if sufficient responsibility to meet the marshal’s
equirements.
