Today's kids have been more exposed to sex and violence than they were before. The availability of explicit content appears to be advancing with every passing year; this includes everything from television programs to video games and social networking sites. The issue of whether or not kids are exposed to too much sex and violence has led to a contentious debate among educators, parents, and child development specialists (Babvey et al., 2020). Despite there being strong arguments made on both sides of the discussion, I think the evidence emphasizes the fact that kids are exposed to too much sex and violence, which can have a detrimental effect on their growth and well-being.
The amount of sexual content and violent content in the movies, music, and video games that our kids play is at an all-time high (Marini et al., 2020). A recent study suggests that parents may be neglecting their responsibilities unintentionally, which is unsettling for parents. 1000 parents of kids between the ages of 5 and 9 were asked to watch eight scenes from movies in random order by the researchers. Either strong violence or sexual content was featured in every clip. Parents were questioned regarding the minimum age at which their children should be before being permitted to view these scenes. The first video was consistently deemed appropriate for older children. The last video was consistently rated as suitable for younger children. Parents' age recommendations were consistently lowered as children watched more clips, i
