AimThe aim of the project is to enable you to investigate and critically assess an existing tool design or process and develop ways in which improvements could be made.
Task 1 Selection of tool or processConsider your own engineering discipline and the typical tools or processes utilised by those involved in the industry. The following are a small selection of tools or processes
to get you thinking:
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing - Ratchet socket set
- Measuring devices
- Tyre iron/lever
- Trolley
- Vice
- Welder
- Electrical/Electronics measurement equipment
- Electrical insulation gloves
- Blowtorch
- Pipe freezing kit
- Pipe cutter
- Temporary clamping equipment
- Adhesive delivery gun
- Flow sensing equipment
- Soldering iron
Power Tools - Drill
- Plane
- Saw (circular saw, jigsaw, reciprocating saw, etc)
- Router
- Sander
| Civil Engineering Plant - Cranes
- Transport
- Concrete pump
- Backhoe excavators
- Jackhammer
- Vibrating probe
- Paving machine
- Water treatment
- Reactor pot process
- Coating process
- Protection systems
- Separation processes
- Nuclear processes
- Coating stone with asphalt
- Cement manufacture
|
In relation to your engineering discipline choose an existing tool or process and state why you have made this choice.
Give a critical evaluation of the various aspects of your chosen tool or process and what aspects of it you consider inadequate.
Task 2 Range of ideasDevelop a range of potential improvements.
Each group member MUST provide at least two drawings (Hand drawn or CAD or both). Please
take time to define your drawings using the techniques you have been taught.
Consider the following aspects to help in your development:
- Sustainability
- Efficiency
- Accuracy
- Power consumption
- Cost
- Materials
- Servicing
- Safety
- Future proofing
- Manoeuvrability/Ease of handling
- Accessibility to a wider user base such as the elderly or disabled.
- Any other aspects which are relevant to the tool or process.
Task 3 ReportUsing the template provided, complete a well-structured short report which includes all aspects supplied in the template.
Group workingYou should work in groups of four. For this project, you may choose your own groups.
Deliverables - A range of defined hand drawings or CAD drawings arising from Task 2, (clearly labelled with the name of the originator). Clear scans of your drawings must be inserted into your report where necessary. If they can’t be read due to poor scanning or printing you will be marked down. Original drawings and sketches do NOT need to be produced.
- A report (Arial 11 point or equivalent, single line spacing, normal margins) which addresses the points raised. The report should contain scans of your drawings and suitable images where appropriate.
You DO NOT need to submit your report to Turnitin for this project.
You DO NOT need to provide references in your report
Learning Outcome | Marking criteria |

To be able to use techniques such as brainstorming, mind-mapping and mental block busting. | 25%
| Clear evidence of innovative solutions having been developed using appropriate innovatory techniques. |
To be able to communicate ideas during the developmental stage by hand and CAD drawing | 30%
| Drawings which clearly portray the ideas developed. |
To condense a range of potential development areas through sound rationale and elimination. | 20%
| Choice of a suitable final design, showing a demonstration of clear reasoning behind that choice. |
