assignments you’ve done to date for this class as well as the Fighting Dark walking tour that you’ll
analyze.
Format
For your midterm project you will create a Walking Tour in three stages:
● Analyze an existing walking tour called Fighting Dark ?
● Write a first draft of your walking tour ?
● Use the feedback you receive from me to write a second draft ?
You will submit everything via Blackboard as normal.
What Do I Need to Complete the Midterm Project?

Respond
How does artist and historian Kamau Ware curate a walking tour based on New
York City’s 1863 Draft Riots?
You should write 3 paragraphs, but use the following questions to help you structure your response:
1. What were the Draft Riots? Remember people, time, and place
2. How does Kamau Ware use music? What effect does that have on the na
ation? Use a specific stop to
analyze.
3. How does he make use of street sounds? What effect does that have on the na
ation? Use a specific stop
to analyze.
4. How does the walking tour connect past and present? Use a specific stop to analyze.
5. Why is it important to curate a walking tour based on our city’s Draft Riots?

Part 2 A Walking Tour through Lower Manhattan - Midterm Project
Walking Tour, Colonial Period - Civil Wa
? Due Sun, Mar 13 by 11:59pm via Blackboard
In Kamau Ware’s Fighting Dark, the historian and artist takes you on a walking tour of Lowe
Manhattan and Midtown Manhattan in order to explore the racial violence that
oke out over fou
days in the summer of 1863.
For your midterm project you are asked to create or write a walking tour of Manhattan
that takes a New Yorker through over 250 years of the city’s history from its beginnings
as Lenape land i.e. Mannahatta to the summer of 1863 in New York.
Things you should include:
● You should be clear on what the name of the land is that you’re talking about i.e “modern day
Little Italy, but then it was called …”
● What time period you’re talking about i.e. early 17th century is always better than 1600s, but a
specific decade or year is even better.
● What the smells, sounds might have been.
● Who (race/ethnicity) and what can be seen.
● What specific streets, landmarks, buildings, organizations can you see
● You should address the feedback I’ve given you on previous assignments, don’t just copy and
paste.
● How would you make use of music, sounds especially street sounds?
● How would you connect past to present?
What Do I Need to Complete the Midterm Project?
● Assignments submitted to date
● Look at the comments I’ve made on your previous assignments
● Notes you made during class
● Timeline we did in class
