Introduction
Located off the southern coast of India in South Asia, Sri Lanka is an island
nation which is bordered by the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Mannar in the Laccadive Sea,
the Palk Strait separating the country from India, and it is situated to the southwest to
the Bay of Bengal (“Where is Sri Lanka?”, 2013). It can be interesting to know that as an
island nation, Sri Lanka does not share any land borders with any other nation but it
does have maritime borders with India (“Where is Sri Lanka?”, 2013).
Overview of Sri Lanka
The country has an area of about 65,610 sq km with a population of around 19.74
million (“Doing Business in Sri Lanka”, n.d.). Sri Lanka has a labor force of 7.49 million
and the per capita income of the country is 2014 USD. The people of Sri Lanka
experiences communication in multiple languages encompassing languages like Sinhala,
Tamil, English etc, and the literacy rate in the country is 90.7% (“Doing Business in Sri
Lanka”, n.d.). As for religion, Buddhism, which includes 70% of adherents, is the
primary religion that is followed in Sri Lanka and apart from Buddhism, Hinduism,
Christianity and Islam are also followed as religions in Sri Lanka with adherents
constituting 15%, 8%, and 7% respectively (“Doing Business in Sri Lanka”, n.d.). Having
Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte as its capital Sri Lanka is governed by a Republican form of
government (“Doing Business in Sri Lanka”, n.d.).
Location and Importance
At the base of the Indian Sub-Continent, about 880 km north of the Equator, Sri
Lanka is located in the Indian Ocean housing a rich and prosperous multi-ethnic society

and culture (“Doing Business in Sri Lanka”, n.d.). Sri Lanka is also a multi-religious
country with “a diverse and rich culture dating back to 2,500 years” (“Doing Business in
Sri Lanka”, n.d.). It is a renowned tourist attraction and due to its possession of fragrant
spices, precious gems, legendary natural beauty, sublime culture and hospitable people,
the country is also known as South Asia’s paradise island (“Doing Business in Sri
Lanka”, n.d.). From a business perspective Sri Lanka can be called the hub of South Asia
ecause of its strategic location on the sea lanes between the East and West (“Doing
Business in Sri Lanka”, n.d.).
Topography and Climate
Sri Lanka has a climatic pattern that can be characterized as tropical and the
country is attributed with such a climatic pattern due to its location within the tropics
etween “5 ° 55' to 9 ° 51' North latitude and between 79 ° 42' to 81 ° 53' East longitude”
(“Climate in Sri Lanka”, n.d.). From a geographical perspective if analyzed then it can be
observed that the topography of Sri Lanka is mainly composed of coastal plains with
some mountains in the south. Sri Lanka’s mountainous region can be located in the
central part of the southern half of the island and the “core region of the central
highlands contain many complex topographical features such as ridges, peaks, plateaus,
asins, valleys and escarpments” (“Climate in Sri Lanka”, n.d.). The other parts of the
island is characteristically flat but several small hills rising a
uptly in the lowlands are
also to be found (“Climate in Sri Lanka”, n.d.). All these topographical features have
significant effect on the spatial patterns of winds, seasonal rainfall, temperature, relative
humidity and myriads of other climatic elements of Sri Lanka, and the affect can be felt
strongly in the monsoon season (“Climate in Sri Lanka”, n.d.). Of multiple origin is the

ainfall of Sri Lanka which include monsoonal, convectional and expressional rain and
these three forms of rainfall accounts for a major share of the annual rainfall (“Climate
in Sri Lanka”, n.d.). One major trait of rainfall in Sri Lanka can be observed in the fact
that “The mean annual rainfall varies from under 900mm in the driest parts
(southeastern and northwestern) to over 5000mm in the wettest parts (western slopes
of the central highlands).
Regional differences in respect of air temperature can be found in Sri Lanka but
such difference is basically due to altitude rather than latitude and the “mean monthly a
temperature differs slightly depending on the seasonal movement of the...
