(this is my work that i have done so far..)
Nurses play a vital role in the health care system. Most of us will encounter, whether personally
and/or directly with a nurse at some stage in our lives. These encounters can impact us positively or
negatively and I believe that a successful encounter would be with a nurse that possesses a great
deal of professionalism in their practice. This reflective work will explore the ideas of
professionalism and why it is important in nursing.
Professionalism as defined in (1) refers to your “total package, how you think, how you look and
act on the job. It includes everything from your technical skills to your appearance to your work
habits.” This definition of professionalism outlines that it is a combination of skills and attributes
that defines you as a professional. Attributes such as compassion, empathy, patience and diligence,
among others, all work together to provide outstanding care from nurses for patients. Personal
characteristics such as “a commitment to competence, integrity, morality, altruism and the
promotion of the public good within their domain” (6) are also important
Nurses are often one of the first points of contact in the health care system. and there is a great deal
of trust instilled within nurses from patients.

Introduction
Professionalism is a significant quality required by every employee in order to perform their workplace duties diligently. Nurses also have the responsibility to be possess a professional attitude, while they are working in the healthcare sector. The present essay is a reflection on the concept of professionalism and its significance in terms of nursing. The essay also identified the features and attitude of a professional nurse in terms of working within the healthcare sector.
Significance of professionalism to a nursing student
In the health and social care organisations, the role of the nurses is indispensable. I, as a nursing student, have understood that we have to be involved in caring for the service users or patients and support them with clinical interventions. Therefore, as viewed by Haroun (2015), their job is quite a grave one in the profession of care provision, whether inside a care setting or while providing care to a support user, personally. Hence, I believe, professionalism is an utmost important attribute within our profession, so that we deal with any situation firmly, without straying away from the key purpose of our duty.
As defined by Finestone (2012), professionalism is the summation of the way an employee behaves, manages and reacts in situations at their workplace. Thus, it can be a result of our skills to work as nurses and our attitude towards the job. In the context of nursing, it can be said that the significance of professionalism to us is...
