To survive the harshness of the American society, the uncertainties of dwelling in
this country, and the ambiguities that the white dominated American societies offer to
the colored people, myriads of African Americans resorted to some specific survival
strategies. The policy of acquiescence is one among such specific survival strategies
adopted on the part of the blacks in the American society.
As a noun the word acquiescence means “the act or condition of acquiescing or
giving tacit assent; agreement or consent by silence or without objection; compliance”
(“Acquiescence”, n.d.) and this policy on the part of the African Americans of accepting
and tolerating the oppressions rendered by the whites actually paved the way for a
considerable number of blacks survive the
utalities of the American society. Myriads
of blacks in this country tried to avoid further oppressions by silently accepting the
harsh and undue treatments of the whites. And by tolerating such inhuman treatments
of the whites a considerable number of blacks actually passively encouraged the
