Homework #2
CS 3162 F22
Due: Thursday, December 15th, 2022 at 11:59PM
Purpose

To analyze a recent real-life security
each – overview an account by the discoverer of the
each, read
the official response, and provide your opinion on the incident and how it was handled.
Assignment

There have been a lot of security
each-related incidents in the recent past. One of them involved
Verizon, and one of its vendors, which resulted in an estimated 6 million records being exposed. The data
each was discovered by Chris Vickery, from the security firm, UpGuard, who informed Verizon of the
data exposure, but it took more than a week to secure the
eached data.
• The account of the discovery, and further details are available here:

• An official response issued by Verizon is available here:

You are to write a paper expressing your analysis and opinion of the situation. You may focus on any
aspect(s) of the security
each as you feel appropriate, but some topics that you must touch upon are:
1. The official response by Verizon states – “…this was NOT a
each or a hack.”…do you agree
that it was neither?
2. UpGuard opines that “The long duration of time between the initial June 13th notification to
Verizon by UpGuard of this data exposure, and the ultimate closure of the
each on June 22nd,
is troubling.” Do you agree (that the duration is troubling)? Why/why not?
3. An account of why it might have taken long to address is discussed in an online article on the
Washington Post at: https:
www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2017/07/17/why-it-took-more-than-a-
week-to-resolve-the-verizon-data-leak. Assuming the explanation is co
ect, what would you (as a
epresentative of Verizon) have done differently to help resolve the problem more
urgently/speedily?
Deliverables

You must submit your homework through eLearning in a free-format document (a text-based
document which you can format/style as you see fit). The document must be at least 2 pages long,
double-spaced, with no larger than a 12-point font. Don’t just answer “I agree/I disagree” – the
focus is on your opinion (reasoning) and that is the main grading criteria.

Plagiarism is not acceptable and will result in score of 0.

Millions of Verizon customer records were exposed and the company has confirmed that 6 million records were compromised by Nice Systems. This incident occu
ed because of misconfiguration of the security setting on the server. Anyone that has a web address can easily download the file. The record included mobile number, account PIN and customer name along with home address and email address. The response from company officials was that np information of customers was stolen. The company has confirmed the only access to the cloud storage areas by the person. The company said that there was no theft and loss of Verizon customer information (Upguard.com, 2022). Even vendors were supporting the approved initiatives that can help in improving the center portal and it required certain data for handling the issue.
UpGuard is the security firm of Verizon and UpGuard has reported the misconfiguration in the cloud system that is based file expository. The security team has discovered that data is exposed and the company has cyber risk driving data insecurity across the digital landscape. The data repository was administrated by Nice Systems that have created logs of customer data for unknown purposes....
