NAU 103 Intro to Marine Transportation Fall 2020
Maritime Research Paper
Due by 23:30 on Nov 30th
• 2-3 page paper (single or 1.5 line spacing, margins no bigger than 1”)
• Research paper / personal reflection style format – I want you to explain
and describe the topic as if you were presenting it to seniors at this school (in
other words, people with a maritime background, but not necessarily masters
of the subject). Include your own personal take on it as well – what you found
interesting, what left you with questions, etc. (it’s okay to phrase this part in a
more personal manner, like you’re writing me a letter instead of upholding the
strict research paper-like format)
• Choose a topic listed below OR, if you desire to write on a topic not listed
here, email me for approval ahead of time (you can essentially write on
anything maritime related, but I still want you to email to confirm)
• Use reliable sources (beyond Wikipedia) & don’t plagiarize! You will be
turning this in via Turn It In on Brightspace, which is a program that searches
your words against a billion other sources – the internet, public papers, private
papers from other schools, and so on. It’s NOT worth the risk. You are
perfectly capable of doing this chill paper by yourself
• Also, please note: ANY time you write information that did not originate
from your own
ain, you MUST cite your source. It’s okay to have a billion
citations, even when it seems like you have one for every sentence – that’s
expected.
• I expect you to write a college-level paper with good grammar, sentence
structure, and so on, HOWEVER, the focus my grading will be on the content
of your paper – your research and reflection, not on how polished your writing
skills are. I will grade you on your approach to the topic and how you explain
it, the sources you used, and the depth of your reflection. Basically, I want to
see that you care (ever so slightly) about what you’re writing. The more
enthusiasm the better.
