Differential association theory was originated by Edwin Sutherland in the year of 1939 and itrecommends that individuals learn values, frames of mind, strategies, and thought processes in criminal conduct through their cooperation with others. As per the views of Sutherland, communication with others has more impact on one`s criminal behaviour and it is learnt. Intimate groups and intimate relationships with people affects one`s criminal behaviour as one learns from these intimate connections. One`s interpretation of the laws and legislations in the area where one resides would impact ones criminal behaviour. If a person sees that the number of favourable interpretations regarding violation of laws exceeds than that of the unfavourable interpretations, then the person would opt to display criminal behaviour. The theory sets that an individual will take part in criminal conduct when the definitions that favour abusing the law surpass those that don't. Definitions for abusing the law could be explicit.
