Practice of development of integrated healthcare delivery systems is very old in United States. It involves merger of hospitals and individual medical practices into large integrated healthcare networks, which are called IHNs in short. Such an amalgamation brings growing pressures in terms of costs, ambitious dog-eat-dog environments and hence enormous changes in panorama of healthcare information systems. As the various entities involved in IHNs are geographically and politically separated, problems arise while sharing of data and inter-communication among people and parts of information systems. This gives birth to a well-guided requirement analysis of such network systems and proper specification and procurement of related applications. This paper discusses how networks get effected when IHNs are formed, challenges faced in the process and their benefits.
